Octomom Nadya Suleman: Officially on Welfare

In sad, but not entirely surprising news, Octomom Nadya Suleman is doing what she swore she would never do and going on welfare, reports say.

The mother of 14 is getting $2,000 a month from the State of California, which sends it directly to a special debit account (see welfare card image).

The card can ONLY be used for food and is closely monitored to ensure its holder isn't making illegal purchases ... i.e. toys, pregnancy tests, etc.

Human Fertility Clinic

Just two years ago, after giving birth to children 7-14, she said she refused to become "a self-fulfilling prophecy" by accepting state assistance.

She also said we'd never see Nadya Suleman nude. It's a week of firsts.

Octo got for the card because her income is less than $119,000 a year and a family of 15 that makes less than that is entitled to welfare benefits.

The $119,000 sum is based on around $8,000 for each member of the household. The more kids, the more you can make and still receive welfare.

The extent to which those changes will affect any given tech company?s bottom line depends on how much leeway it has to absorb higher labor costs. For a company like Amazon, which already loses money on every $199 Kindle Fire it sells, a bump in wages might have a significant effect. Apple, in contrast, has the highest profit margins in the industry. Its new iPad runs from $499 to $829. Adding a few cents or dollars to the production cost is unlikely to affect its profitability. And even if it did, Apple could just raise its prices a little higher. Quality, trendiness, beauty, ease of use?those, not price, are Apple customers? main concerns.

Impact of Crisis, Trauma, and Disaster Events on Mental Health

In the course of their work, counselors come face to face with crisis, traumatic experiences, and disastrous events. Although they may not be physically hurt, they are affected mentally and end up seeking counseling from their supervisors in order to recover from the experiences. The following two cases show how counselors are affected by crisis, trauma and disasters events.

While counselors are supposed to provide guidance to people recovering from traumatic experiences, they end up becoming victims of traumatic experiences themselves (James, 2008). They experience burnout and may be affected mentally. The case of Sam is a clear indication of how counselors can be affected by crises, trauma, and disastrous events in the course of their work. After being a Mental Health Disaster Volunteer for 3 years, Sam has seen a lot.

He has seen school shooting, car and train accidents, tornadoes, hurricane, fire, and other accidents. Although counselors are expected to have a high level of mental and emotional resilience, they are human beings and they are affected by witnessing traumatic experiences. After witnessing traumatic events, counselors are likely to suffer from vicarious trauma (McAdams & Keener, 2008; U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, 2007). Although they may not be affected physically, they are affected psychologically and may experience prolonged crying and sadness, fear, nightmares and insomnia, disorientation and confusions, uneasiness, and others (Everly & Lating, 2004). In addition, traumatic events may trigger memories of past loss that could have taken place many years ago. Therefore, Sam is psychologically affected by what he has been seen for the last three years. He many not have been physically hurt in all those accidents and traumatic experiences but the mere fact of witnessing and counseling people who experienced the accidents has affected him as well. It is evident that Sam has been psychological exhausted as a result of traumatic events he has experienced in the course of three years has been a Mental Health Disaster Volunteer.

The worst trauma that has ever happened in my life is fire in the neighborhood. The fire started early in the morning when some people were asleep while others had already left for work and had to come back to salvage what was left of their belongings. It was very horrible witnessing mothers crying when their children were stuck two floors up. In the confusion to evacuate the building, some people had climbed upstairs only to find no way out. It was also horrible to see fire men carrying charred remains of people we had lived together. Although I was not physically hurt in the accident, I was affected mentally because I lost some people I had known for a long time. I spent sleepless nights thinking of the whole incident again and again. Images of crying mothers and wailing children calling for help two floors above rang in my mind for many months and they resurface in mind today every time I see a fire incident. Every time I see a fireman, I remember the charred body of children they carried out the building that morning. I felt uneasy until I had to relocate from that neighborhood. I had to seen counseling for 7 months to recover from the trauma.

In conclusion, counselors are psychologically affected by crisis, trauma, and disasters experiences. Although they may not be physically affected, they suffer from vicarious trauma that may lead to post-traumatic conditions. It is imperative that counselor should seek help from their supervisors.

You can just put your information onto your website, which is to be accessible for individuals to access. You can gain many clients once you learn what captures their interest. Obtaining the right people's attention will probably be difficult, however, especially as you are competing in an economy that orbits mainly around offering manpower and services.

You will additionally be competing with established figures within your industry.

Optimization specialists explore market and keyword trends which they employ on different SEO methods like keyword-centric submission of content, social websites promotion, and email marketing.

Understanding Email Marketing

Electronic message has become on the list of the world's most widely-used communication tools for many years. Individuals can share data and files by sending them via email. It really is among the most economical methods of communication. Perth SEO companies make use of this form of Internet website marketing to directly educate prospects about their services.

There are two varieties of email marketing. The first is the email blast. Your Search engine optimization firm will gather connections from your target area in Perth. They're going to file this information in their database and email each one of these regarding your products. You want to be very mindful while you read the copy for such mail messages. Spam blocking systems may not accept your email when it has too many keywords in the text. Messages sent through email blast usually have coupon codes and other advertising discounts that will entice customers to join your site or perhaps make use of your services.

The second type is the opt-in type of email marketing or the subscriber list. Customers have the choice to tick an opt-in box when they enroll in your services online. You may send promotional products, updates on the services, along with other things which might be interesting for your prospects. Use either type with yet another popular communication medium today - social media - in order to gain maximum exposure.

It is easy to monitor which efforts work and which of them don't due to the email tracking features on hand. You should check specific information, like the specific location of the recipients, the ratio of opened to unopened emails, the quantity or responses that came from your email blast or subscriber list, and what links your potential clients clicked through. You may gather and review these statistics to understand which campaigns give good results and which need adjustment. This will help you customise the next approach and guarantee online marketing success.

NEW ORLEANS (AP) ? Decisions are still pending on a possible appeal of Sean Payton's suspension or an interim coach should his season-long punishment be upheld, a person familiar with the situation said.

The person says Payton, general manager Mickey Loomis and their staffs were in meetings at the team's suburban headquarters Thursday and focused primarily on preparations for next month's NFL draft. The person spoke to The Associated Press Thursday on condition of anonymity because the Saints have not announced their plans.

"Everyone is working hard, in draft meetings, et cetera ... trying to get better," the person said.

Payton's suspension in connection with the Saints' bounty scandal is slated to begin on Sunday, and NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell has said he has until Monday to appeal.

Payton has sought advice on the matter from his friend and retired coach Bill Parcells, who has told several media outlets he'd consider taking the Saints' interim coaching job if Payton, his prot?g?, asked him to take over.

"I had plenty of opportunities to do things with different teams, and I've turned them all down," Parcells, who turns 71 in August, told the New York Daily News. "But this one is special. This guy is like family to me. And if I could help him, I would."

Payton began working with Parcells in 2003, when he was hired as an offensive assistant with the Dallas Cowboys. The two have been close ever since and Payton, throughout his six seasons as New Orleans' head coach, has continued consulting his mentor on numerous matters, including how to handle preparations for the 2010 Super Bowl.

However, the Saints must clear up several matters before they can choose an interim coach. They must not only decide whether to appeal, but would have to see if an appeal resulted in a reduced punishment.

If Payton's punishment is upheld, the Saints could then proceed with finding an interim coach either from their own staff or outside the organization. If the Saints choose the latter approach and Parcells becomes a top candidate, the club would still have to interview a minority candidate under the NFL's "Rooney Rule."

"I don't know how this is going to play out," Parcells, who was a Hall of Fame finalist this year, told the newspaper. "I really don't know anything about the situation. There's a lot of things going on here, and I would suspect it's going to take a while to all sort out."

There are also three strong candidates among Saints assistants to take over as interim coach: offensive coordinator Pete Carmichael, defensive coordinator Steve Spagnuolo and offensive line coach Aaron Kromer. Payton expressed confidence in the abilities of his own assistants to compensate for his absence, but also has voiced some misgivings about saddling those coaches with additional responsibilities.

"We feel like we've got a number of good candidates" on the staff, Payton said earlier this week at NFL meetings in Florida. "The trick then is what it does to affect their roles that they currently have."

The appeal process itself, should Payton choose that route, is not expected to give him much additional time to work. Goodell has said he would expedite that process, indicating that it is highly unlikely Payton would be able to keep working through the draft in late April if he files an unsuccessful appeal.

That is why Payton is spending long hours with Loomis, other coaches and scouts reviewing draft prospects this week. Payton said he has also laid out plans for the offseason training program and the beginning of training camp, up until the Saints play Arizona in the Hall of Fame game Aug. 5 in Canton, Ohio.

If this is indeed Payton's final week of work in 2012, Loomis will be able to oversee the draft and handle other roster moves up until the season starts. Then he is slated to serve his eight-game suspension for failing to put a stop to the bounty system in a timely way. Assistant head coach Joe Vitt, who also coaches linebackers, is facing a six-game suspension.

The NFL's investigation in New Orleans found that Payton initially lied to league investigators about the existence of a bounty and instructed his defensive assistants to do the same. Payton twice apologized for his role in an enterprise that offered payouts for knocking out opponents, saying he takes "full responsibility" for a system that operated for three years under his watch.

The NFL has said as many as 27 players also could be sanctioned for their role in the scandal.

Big Phones? So Over.

Screen shot 2012-03-29 at 12.54.10 PMThe other day, Matt made a desperate plea: "Please don't buy cheap Android phones." To do so is a mistake, and the more you buy, the more cheap phones flood the market, and thus more people are walking around with crap up against their faces. And after hearing that Samsung has sold 5 million Galaxy Notes, I think it may be time to make my own plea: Please stop buying giant phones. Now, obviously I don't take this request as seriously as the whole cheap Android phone thing. But I was actually musing to myself just last night that if people continue to buy phones with 4.5-inch + screen sizes, phone makers will think that's OK. It's not. It's just as dumb as Motorola's advertising, directed squarely at men with robots and cyborgs.

Do you really need a colonoscopy? | UC Health

UC Berkeley Wellness Letter: Other tests may be just as good, encourage more to be tested.

Screening for colorectal cancer ? that is, cancers of the colon (large intestine) and rectum ? is a proven lifesaver. This is partly due to the fact that this is one cancer which screening can actually prevent, since it can lead to the detection and removal of polyps, some of which may progress to cancer.

So why are anywhere from one-third to one-half of Americans over 50 not getting the recommended tests for colorectal cancer? One reason this screening rate lags behind those for some other cancers may be an overemphasis on colonoscopy as the screening test of choice in this country.

For years many experts, organizations and media spokespeople (such as Katie Couric) have promoted colonoscopy as the best colorectal screening test. As a result, it has become the most frequently used screening test for colorectal cancer in the U.S. Most doctors today do not even discuss alternatives with their patients.

Offering only colonoscopies discourages some people from getting tested, since they may dread the bowel-cleansing prep (clear liquid diet, strong laxatives and high fluid intake), are scared or embarrassed about the procedure itself, worry about potential complications and/or can?t afford its high price. Medicare and private insurance cover colonoscopy (and other screening tests), but that leaves out uninsured people, who are only half as likely to be screened for colorectal cancer as the insured.

Colonoscopy is a good test, though not perfect. You should know your other screening options as well. ?Much more screening will be carried out if primary-care providers and the American public are not made to feel that screening tests other than colonoscopy are ineffective,? says Dr. James Allison, professor emeritus of medicine at the University of California, San Francisco, and a leading expert on colorectal cancer screening.

Colonoscopy: strengths and weaknesses

Colonoscopy examines the colon via a flexible scope that transmits the images to a video screen while the patient is sedated. The claim that it is the best screening option has been based on assumptions and expectations about what it can do ? allow a doctor to examine the entire colon and rectum and remove polyps during the procedure. But colonoscopy?s superiority has never been proven in randomized controlled trials (the ?gold standard?) comparing its effectiveness to other tests.

Other kinds of studies have suggested that colonoscopy (typically done every ten years if no cancer or polyps are found) doesn?t save more lives than sigmoidoscopy, which examines only the lower part of the colon and is usually done every five years. In some studies, sigmoidoscopy was combined with stool tests (see below). Two large randomized controlled studies comparing colonoscopy with stool tests are underway, but results won?t be available for years.

[Editor?s note: In February, shortly after this article went to press, a major study on colonoscopy was published in the New England Journal of Medicine. It confirmed that colonoscopy, by detecting and removing polyps, can prevent cancer and save lives. In fact, it cut the death rate from the disease by half. But the study was not a randomized controlled study, did not look at colonoscopy as a screening test for the general public, and didn?t compare it to stool tests or sigmoidoscopy. It included only people with polyps, some of which were detected by these other tests.]

One problem with colonoscopy is that it?s less effective in detecting polyps and cancer in the right side of the colon (the upper portion, including the ascending colon and cecum) than the left side. This is because many polyps and cancers in the right side are flat, pale and difficult to identify and remove completely. Also, bowel cleansing may be less complete in the right side of the colon, making detection more difficult there.

Other factors can also reduce colonoscopy?s accuracy. For instance, it tends to be less accurate when done comparatively quickly, by less experienced doctors (typically those who are not gastroenterologists) and/or when patients don?t prep adequately to empty the colon.

In addition, though colorectal cancer starts in certain adenomas and other polyps, the vast majority of polyps detected and removed (including most ademonas) are harmless. It?s estimated that 30 to 50 percent of Americans over 50 have or will develop adenomas, and that between 1 and 10 percent of these polyps will progress to cancer in 5 to 10 years.

Finally, colonoscopy poses a small ? but not insignificant ? risk of serious complications such as bleeding or colon perforation.

Sigmoidoscopy has some advantages over colonoscopy. It costs only a fraction as much, is quicker and can be done well by primary care doctors. The prep is simpler, and sedation is usually not needed. But it too misses some cancers, especially since it can?t examine the upper portion of the colon. And if suspicious polyps are found, you?ll need a colonoscopy to remove them and check the upper colon.

Starting with stool

Not too long ago, annual stool tests were the primary way to screen for colorectal cancer in the U.S. In most countries they still are. Called fecal occult blood tests (FOBT), they detect hidden (?occult?) blood in stool, a possible sign of colorectal cancer. Your doctor gives you a kit to take home; you then provide one to three stool samples to be analyzed, depending on the type of FOBT. You?ll be referred for a colonoscopy if blood is detected.

The standard stool tests are called guaiac tests, named for the compound used on the test cards. The early versions have increasingly been replaced by more sensitive guaiac tests. However, they still often produce false-positive results because of blood that comes from something besides polyps or cancer; certain foods or medications (even vitamin C) can also throw off the results. And they miss some advanced polyps and cancers, especially those that don?t bleed or do so intermittently. That?s why screening should be done every year ? repeated testing provides multiple opportunities to identify advanced polyps before they become malignant and early cancers before they become life-threatening.

A 2010 review paper in Gastroenterology concluded that annual highly sensitive FOBT is indeed effective at identifying colon cancer and reducing deaths from it. Because it is inexpensive, more people can afford FOBT, so it may save more lives than colonoscopy, according to some analyses. But FOBT is most effective only if people are compliant?take the test annually and do the follow-up tests when necessary.

A more advanced form of FOBT is the fecal immunochemical test (FIT), which is superior in several ways. For one thing, it requires only one stool sample. It is more accurate than standard FOBT because it identifies antigens in blood that may be in the stool, and it can?t be thrown off by food or medication. And it only detects blood originating in the colon or rectum. What?s more, the processing and reading of the test can be automated for quality assurance. Used primarily in Europe, Australia, Japan and Israel, FIT is being used more and more in the U.S., even though it is more expensive than standard stool tests.

Wellness Letter?s advice

Everybody age 50 to 75 should be screened for colorectal cancer, whichever test they use. People at high risk ? notably those with a family history, a known genetic risk, inflammatory bowel disease or certain other disorders ? should start earlier.

Discuss the screening options with your doctor. Colonoscopy is not the only test ? which is fortunate, since there aren?t enough skilled practitioners to screen all eligible people. Nor is it necessarily the best. All the tests have strengths and weaknesses, which you and your doctor need to weigh. Here are the options:

? Colonoscopy every 10 years, unless polyps have been found or you are at high risk, in which case more frequent testing will be needed. Despite that standard guideline, many people, especially those over 65, have colonoscopies repeated in less than seven years, even though there is no clear reason for them to repeat the exam that soon, according to a study in the Archives of Internal Medicine last year.

? Sigmoidoscopy every five years, along with stool tests (preferably FIT) every three years.

? Annual stool tests. Ask your doctor about FIT, or at least make sure you?re getting a highly sensitive FOBT.

? People at elevated risk or with a history of polyps and/or colon cancer should have colonoscopies ? and perhaps FIT during the intervals.

Your doctor should consider your personal preferences. For instance, some people want to steer clear of colonoscopy because of its prep, invasiveness and/or cost. Others prefer colonoscopy because it usually needs to be done only once a decade rather than every year like stool tests, and it allows for the removal of polyps, if present. (It?s worth noting that some colon-cleansing preps and regimens are easier and still effective ? we?ll discuss this in an upcoming issue.)

You can stop being screened after 75 if you?ve always had normal results and have no symptoms, and all screening should stop after age 85, according to federal guidelines. With increasing age, the benefits of screening decline, while the risks from sigmoidoscopy and especially colonoscopy increase.

Tim Cook pays a visit to a Foxconn factory, smiles for the camera

Image
We can't say we're particularly surprised, but Apple CEO Tim Cook managed to take some time out of his whirlwind tour of China to pay a visit to a Foxconn factory in Zhengzhou charged with making those shiny new iPhones. The above shot of the bespectacled executive in the bright yellow smock was issued by Apple itself to document the trip. The overseas visit and the ensuing factory tour all come in the wake of a new focus on the working conditions of Foxconn factories that arrived thanks in part to a report from This American Life later retracted by the show.

Xbox 360 app usage up 30% year-over year, surpasses online gaming

Tue, Mar 27, 2012 | 21:40 BST

It looks as though Xbox 360 is used more for watching online movies, TV shows and listening to music than it is for online gaming through Xbox Live, according to Microsoft?s Yusuf Mehdi.

Mehdi, the head of marketing and strategy for Microsoft?s Xbox business, told the LA Times that households spend 84 hours a month on Xbox Live gaming, watching videos and listening to music.

Over half that time is spent on music and videos, with the figure as a whole up 30% year-over-year in households where on average, 150 hours a month are spent watching television.

?What we?re seeing is that people are turning on the Xbox to play games and then keeping it on afterwards to get other types of entertainment,? said Mehdi.

Over 20 million people have an Xbox Live subscription, and over 66 million Xbox 360s have been sold worldwide.

Today, the firm announced apps for HBO, MLB.tv, and Comcast would through system update on the console today.
