Controversial Golf Project in Croatia's Dubrovnik Cleared by Authorities

Critics have raised environmental concerns over the development on a site, and also said that the modern project is incompatible with the architecture of the city, a UNESCO world heritage site.

The project, backed by Australian former world number one golfer Greg Norman, aims to build two golf courses, two hotels, 240 villas and 400 apartments on 310 hectares (766 acres) of the land.

"A total of 16 city councillors of the 24 present during Tuesday's vote backed the project," city council spokeswoman Kristina Civalo told AFP of the vote on Tuesday evening.

Construction on the project -- the brainchild of Israeli businessman Aaron Frenkel -- could begin later this year.

Those supporting the scheme say it will result in the creation of local jobs and provide a boost to the tourism industry.

Norman, who won two Majors, is to open a golf academy at the project site, local media reported.

Some 100 protestors had gathered outside Dubrovnik's city hall to voice their opposition and carried banners which read "Srdj is ours" in reference to the name of the land where the complex will be built.

The newest member of the European Union, Croatia hosts more than 11 million tourists yearly, almost triple of its population of 4.2 million.

Dubrovnik is visited by some 700,000 tourists every year.

Chevron's 2Q profit falls on lower oil prices

Chevron's latest quarterly profit was huge ? $5.37 billion ? but down 26 percent from last year due to lower oil prices, less production, and maintenance work at some refineries.

The results mirrored lower profit at Exxon Mobil and Shell, and they also lagged Wall Street expectations. Chevron shares fell $1.49, or 1.2 percent, to $124.95 Friday.

Consumers aren't likely to feel sorry for Chevron ? not after they fill their tanks at the national average of $3.63 for a gallon of gas. And Chevron's quarterly profit was much fatter than those at Google, General Electric and Johnson & Johnson ? like Chevron, they all rank among the 10 biggest companies by stock market value.

But for the second-biggest U.S. oil company, Chevron Corp.'s haul was considered disappointing because a year ago it earned $7.21 billion.

Chevron's profit worked out to $2.77 per share, down from $3.66 per share a year ago. Analysts were expecting $2.97 per share, according to FactSet.

Revenue fell 8 percent to $57.37 billion but came in higher than the $56.01 billion that analysts expected.

Chairman and CEO John Watson said earnings fell "largely due to softer market conditions for crude oil and refined products." He said repair and maintenance work on U.S. refineries was also a factor.

In percentage terms, Chevron's profit decline was only half as steep as those reported Thursday by Exxon Mobil Corp., which earned $6.86 billion on revenue of $106.47 billion, and Royal Dutch Shell. But the causes were similar ? lower oil prices and declining production.

The average price that Chevron got for a barrel of oil or natural gas liquids was $92 in the United States and $94 overseas; both were down $5 a barrel from last year's second quarter. Natural gas prices in the U.S. jumped 74 percent, but that was up from 10-year lows in 2012.

Chevron sold more natural gas in the U.S., but sales of refined products such as gasoline dipped both at home and overseas.

Production of oil and gas fell 1.6 percent, midway between Shell's 1.3 percent decline and Exxon's 1.9 percent decrease.

Chevron boosted production in the Marcellus shale of Pennsylvania, a deep-water development in the Gulf of Mexico and a new project in Angola, but that wasn't enough to offset declines in maturing fields elsewhere.

This week's numbers underscored the challenge that the major oil companies face to tap new sources. They must drill in remote areas or blast through tight rock formations. The costs are high, and it can take years for a project to begin producing crude.

Big Oil may be reining in any ambitions of boosting production. Exxon has posted nine straight quarters in which output sank from 12 months earlier. Shell announced it was dropping plans to raise production to 4 million barrels per day by 2018 from the current 3 million per day.

CAMP MURRAY, Wash. - The large, armored eight-wheeled Stryker vehicle became a fixture of the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan. Joint Base Lewis McChord became a center for their deployment.? Now the Washington National Guard is putting in a request with the Pentagon for Strykers that could help out in disasters.

?"You could evacuate civilians out of a flood area or even a fire area,? said Col. Alan Dorow, who, among other roles, handled logistics for the Guard during major flooding in Lewis County in 2007 that damaged and flooded I-5 and required evacuation of hundreds.

Col. Dorow is also a veteran of the 81st Armored Combat Team, a joint Washington and California Guard unit which is currently equipped with M-1 tanks and Bradley Fighting vehicles among other equipment. He deployed twice to the war in Iraq with the 81st.

Thursday, Governor Jay Inslee and Maj. Gen. Bret Daugherty, Washington's adjutant general, urged the Pentagon to convert the 81st Armored Brigade Combat Team to a Stryker brigade.

As the war winds down in Afghanistan, recently returning active duty soldiers from the 4th Brigade 2nd Infantry learned that their unit could be deactivated.

"The 81st now uses old tanks that are too heavy to use on our roads during emergencies,? said Inslee, who quoted in a National Guard press release.

He went on to say that the Strykers would not only be more practical in natural disasters from floods to fire to earthquakes, but would continue to be available in their combat role as the military continues to shift its focus to the Asia-Pacific region.

Only one National Guard unit in Pennsylvania currently uses Stryker vehicles.

Baltimore Ravens head coach John Harbaugh speaks at a news conference to announce that tight end Dennis Pitta dislocated his hip after colliding with safety James Ihedigbo at NFL football training camp in Owings Mills, Md., Saturday, July 27, 2013. (AP) ? Baltimore Ravens tight end Dennis Pitta dislocated his hip in practice Saturday and will be sidelined indefinitely with what coach John Harbaugh called "a serious injury."

Pitta was carted off the field after colliding with safety James Ihedigbo in the back of the end zone vying for a pass from Joe Flacco. The receiver lay prone for several minutes before the cart arrived.

The Ravens begin defense of their Super Bowl title on Sept. 5 in Denver. Pitta will at least miss that game, Harbaugh said, but the severity of the injury could keep the tight end out for much longer than that.

The Ravens re-tweeted a story by ESPN in which a league source said Pitta would miss the entire season.

Baltimore general manager Ozzie Newsome did not immediately answer a text message from The Associated Press seeking information on Pitta's status.

After practice, a somber Harbaugh said, "Dennis has a dislocated hip. We'll have to take a look at that and see exactly what it is. It's a serious injury. He is going to be out for a while. He will not be in the Denver game and we'll just have to play it from there to see how long it goes."

Late Saturday night, a Ravens official said the club had no update from doctors or Pitta. He said the team website regularly re-tweets stories and updates from various news agencies.

Pitta was preparing for his fourth season with Baltimore. The 6-foot-4, 245-pounder caught 61 passes for 669 yards and seven touchdowns last season.

In the playoffs, Pitta had 14 catches for 163 yards and three scores.

With Pitta gone, the Ravens are without their two of their most productive receivers last year. Pitta's 61 catches were tied for second with Ray Rice behind Anquan Boldin, who was traded to San Francisco during the offseason.

"Obviously, he was a very, very productive guy for us," Ravens offensive coordinator Jim Caldwell said of Pitta. "He made a lot of big plays last year. We'll see what happens. But somebody is going to have to step up. We do have some capable guys all across the flanks. We do have some weapons. We're just going to have to have some guys make some plays for us."

In his first three NFL seasons, Pitta has 102 receptions for 1,075 yards and 10 touchdowns over 43 regular-season games.

NEW YORK (Reuters) - Herbert Allison Jr, a former Merrill Lynch & Co president who also oversaw the U.S. government's $700 billion bank-bailout program, died on Sunday at the age of 69, Bloomberg News reported on Monday.

Allison died at his home in Westport, Connecticut, Bloomberg reported citing an interview with his son Andrew.

"Herb was part of the proud Merrill Lynch tradition, helped build our company to what it is today, and served with distinction as a public official at an important time in our history. We extend our condolence to his family," Bank of America Chief Executive Brian Moynihan told Reuters on Monday evening.
