Hello!

I don't see any topic about Mixed Martial Arts here, so that why I am writing about this. Is there anybody who like or watch that sport? In USA, and in the world, the most popular organisation is UFC, Strikeforce and Bellator. In Poland we have KSW and MMA Attack. Are in USA Polish fans of this sport?

Im not a huge fan, but I started on the beginners team out at the comcom zone in Krakow mostly just to stay in shape.
It's an extremely demanding sport and I have great respect for the fighters!

I think the gym in the comcom zone belongs to the famous Polish UFC fighter Tomasz Drwal.

I used to watch half naked men hold each other down and shout rude words at each other, but that was when I worked in a gay bar. From what I've seen of this 'sport' it's not much different :P

Here in Olsztyn, we have a couple of MMA clubs, and one of the top MMA-ers in Poland, Mamed Khalidov.
If I was younger, and didn't have a dodgy neck, I'd like to try MMA.
Olsztyn has a pretty strong Martial Arts scene in other disciplines too.

Spokesman: George H.W. Bush in intensive care

HOUSTON (AP) ? Former President George H.W. Bush has been admitted to the intensive care unit at a Houston hospital "following a series of setbacks including a persistent fever," but he is alert and talking to medical staff, his spokesman said Wednesday.

Jim McGrath, Bush's spokesman in Houston, said in a brief email that Bush was admitted to the ICU at Methodist Hospital on Sunday. He said doctors are cautiously optimistic about his treatment and that the former president "remains in guarded condition."

No other details were released about his medical condition, but McGrath said Bush is surrounded by family. Bush has been hospitalized since Nov. 23.

Earlier Wednesday, McGrath said a fever that kept Bush in the hospital over Christmas had gotten worse and that doctors had put him on a liquids-only diet.

"It's an elevated fever, so it's actually gone up in the last day or two," McGrath told The Associated Press earlier in the day. "It's a stubborn fever that won't go away."

But he said the bronchitis-like cough that initially brought the 88-year-old to the hospital has improved.

Bush was visited on Christmas by his wife, Barbara, his son, Neil, and Neil's wife, Maria, and a grandson, McGrath said. Bush's daughter, Dorothy, was expected to arrive Wednesday in Houston from Bethesda, Md. The 41st president has also been visited twice by his sons, George W. Bush, the 43rd president, and Jeb Bush, the former governor of Florida.

Bush and his wife live in Houston during the winter and spend their summers at a home in Kennebunkport, Maine.

The former president was a naval aviator in World War II ? at one point the youngest in the Navy ? and was shot down over the Pacific. He achieved notoriety in retirement for skydiving on at least three of his birthdays since leaving the White House in 1992.

Considering a divorce? Wait until January

16 hrs.

Going through a divorce during the holidays can be emotionally wrenching, which is why many people don't do it -- they put it off until January.?

"People don't want to upset the apple cart over the holidays, and they want a peaceful Christmas, Hanukkah or New Year's. And then, because they don't want to spend another damned year with that spouse of theirs, as soon as the holidays are over they pull the plug and file," says Alton Abramowitz, president of the American Academy of Matrimonial Lawyers.?

While there are no hard numbers on how many divorces are filed in January, Abramowitz says it's undoubtedly a popular time to act, rivaled only by September, when marriages break up after the summer holidays. Yet waiting for the holidays to pass doesn't all come down to simply wanting a harmonious holiday season. There are sound financial reasons to wait until January.?

1. Waiting for the bonus?
A husband or wife who waits until January is likely to be entitled to any year-end windfall that might come from a spouse's job.?

"In New York, at least, once you file for divorce and you set the cut-off date; anything you obtain afterward is separate property," says Steven Goldfeder, a matrimonial attorney in New York City who acknowledges that year-end bonuses are often fought over, even if a spouse declares he or she wants a divorce in January. "Someone could claim the bonus isn't really for that particular year, but a payment to entice someone to stay at the firm for the future."?

2. Cool your emotions?
The holidays are a time when emotions run high. "If your spouse always has it in her mind that Christmas was ruined, she or he may not be so eager to settle with you," says Goldfeder. "Your divorce might drag out for months or years longer than it would have."?

Once, shortly before Christmas, Goldfeder received a call from a client who said a co-worker had had a baby they both believed was his. The client, married and the father of three, planned to tell his wife and assumed she would leave him. Goldfeder talked him into first getting a paternity test. The client's family had a nice Christmas, and the day after, the client learned he wasn't the father.?

Not exactly a warm holiday tale, but by cooling your emotions, you may save your family a lot of stress.?

3. Avoid disastrous shopping?
December is the shopping season, and that can spell disaster if an angry spouse is set loose with a credit card. "The spouse served with divorce papers may feel that they deserve some kind of emotional gift because of this horrible thing their spouse did to them," says Kevin Worthley, a certified divorce financial analyst and certified financial planner in Warwick, R.I.

An angry spouse may also be more inclined to want to drain the bank accounts and run up the credit cards. "That's a danger any time, but past the holidays, when everything's been bought, there's likely less inclination to buy a big-ticket item out of revenge," says Worthley.?

4. Think about April?
At year-end, taxes come to mind. "Obviously, the better records you have, the better position you're going to be in," says Andrew Katzenstein, a Los Angeles lawyer, referring to paperwork that you might want to start collecting now.?

Katzenstein, who specializes in assisting high-net-worth individuals, businesses and charities, says that in the past there haven't been many tax advantages to filing for a divorce in January rather than December. Filling for divorce is just a beginning step, after all. Many couples end up filing their taxes jointly until the divorce is completed.?

But tax brackets may go up in 2013, depending on whether the U.S. budget dispute is resolved. So going forward, the calculus may be different. "The person who pays alimony will get more bang for their deduction buck, and the person receiving the payments will pay more taxes," he says.?

5. More time to plan?
If you've made up your mind that a divorce is going to be one of your New Year's resolutions, there are things you can do now. Whatever side you end up on -- paying alimony or receiving it -- you need to start preparing.?

"You should start collecting all of your end-of-the-year statements," says Worthley. "You really need to know everything -- your household budget, your assets, what's in your checking account, how much you're paying for the mortgage, all of your debts and your credit card balances. It's important to get all of that."?

Your financial records will be needed to determine how much spousal support will be paid out, and how the finances will be divided. "The more information you get, the less complicated it'll be when you're negotiating and working things out with a financial mediator, attorney or judge," says Deborah Moskovitch, a divorce coach in Toronto who counts January as her busiest month for new clients.?

The turn of the new year can also be a good time to try to salt away some extra money to pay for an attorney, says Worthley.?

You don't need to have all of your money affairs in order the moment you and your spouse begin discussing the dreaded D-word. You may want to start the year off with a fresh start by filing for divorce in January, but chances are you'll be lucky to be divorced before that year is up.?

"Here in California, if you didn't file by October, you weren't going to get divorced in the next year anyway," says Katzenstein. "And if you decide to divorce in January, it's not like you'll be divorced in February. It's going to be a process."?

I have a tremendous amount of love and support in my life - MetaFilter

Okay, that was actually awesome. It had plenty of judgement going on, but it wasn't out-and-out attack, and took the answers given at face value rather than arguing against them.

I'm surprised and pleased to see something like this. Thanks for posting!

Not my cup of tea. That said, I had known couples like that many many years ago. It worked for them and so good for them. If it works for you, god bless. Why judge others?
posted by Postroad at 10:10 AM on December 26 Really nice little report, thanks for posting it. The reactions of the kids were especially interesting, and reassuring. But they didn't raise two questions which, for me at least, help to understand much better how polyamorous relationships work: 1. Does your partner have to be aware of the liaisons you have with others? 2. Do you sometimes start up relationships with people who are not polyamorous themselves?

I think for most polyamorous couples the answers are yes, and no, respectively. And when I understood that from my polyamorous friends, I got it.

Once upon a time, I was in a poly relationship. My gf and I had started out monogamous, and I was happy with that, but she had done the poly thing before and preferred it... and after about a year of us being together, she voiced a desire to have an open relationship. I was not interested and held my ground against it for a long time, but after about a year I decided she wasn't going to leave me for anyone else (and if she did... well, I rationalized a lot). I relented. She started seeing someone else. There were many bumps, but it was fine for several years. It was several years before I started seeing someone else, too. When we split... well, we wanted very different things out of life well apart from the open relationship issue, and I'd rate polyamory very low on the list of reasons why we broke up.

The thing you have to consider, going into an open relationship, is that sooner or later events will turn so that both partners really, genuinely need you and you cannot be in two places at once. It sucks. It really does.

Open relationships work out until they don't. Just like monogamous relationships. I have no interest at all in going back to the "open" status--I'm very happy with the monogamous relationship I have now, thank you--but it does indeed work out for some.
posted by scaryblackdeath at 10:42 AM on December 26

And when I understood that from my polyamorous friends, I got it.

not sure why those particular answers helped you get it. while many couples feel on some level that their relationship has to fit in to some broader definition to be considered legitimate, once a couple is open to polyamory they're more likely to realize that the terms of the relationship are entirely customizable for those involved. so the particular answers seem less relevant than the point that the couples get to negotiate them entirely at their own discretion.
posted by fallacy of the beard at 10:45 AM on December 26 [1 favorite]

From my experience in and around open relationships, the ONLY factor that I would consider essential for any relationship, polyamorous or otherwise to be "legitimate" is that the partners communicate clearly to each other what their expectations are. Sadly, I see so many relationships, open or otherwise, where I hear one partner say, "Well, I ASSUME that this is okay. We haven't really talked about it at all. I don't want to rock the boat by bringing it up."

California real estate trends

California real estate trends show consumers and builders leaning in a new direction when it comes to housing design.

By Vicki Johnson

In the wake of the housing market crash, the heyday of the inflated California suburban tract home may be a thing of the past. According to a recent report from the Mercury News, both national and California real estate trends are shifting in favor of more practical designs catering to baby boomers looking to downsize, first-time homeowners on a budget and growing or multigenerational families in need of flexible living spaces.

The report notes that home builders throughout the state are beginning to focus on homes that are more energy efficient, compact and closer to work and entertainment centers. In addition, some homes are being built with multiple generations in mind, and including separate quarters, cottages or detached units for aging parents or adult children who need a place to stay but also wish to maintain some degree of privacy and autonomy. In today?s economy, both of these options make sense ? for buyers on a budget, and also for those who simply prefer smaller, more customized living environments to large luxury homes. For example, some baby boomers are choosing to downsize in order to reduce the time and money spent on maintaining a big house, yard, pool and other amenities. Instead, they may choose to live closer to entertainment, shopping, restaurants and other amenities in their community, or to spend their discretionary funds on travel.

Changing times, changing home designs

Kevin Carson, president of the California-based New Home Company, tells the News that recent poll results show many homeowners eager to reduce energy bills through greater energy efficiency over the next few years. Those polled also showed an interest in ?more windows, downstairs bedrooms and proximity to jobs and shopping? ? priorities that Carson sees as signs of the times.

As Southern California home builders begin work on new developments to showcase these features, it is important for local homeowners to examine their own priorities and see what type of home makes sense for them. Here in San Diego County, we are surrounded by a diverse array of neighborhoods, communities and housing styles: and whether you are looking to move into a smaller home while maintaining a touch of luxury, or to find a larger property that will house a growing family, an experienced real estate agent can help you achieve your real estate goals. Geminid meteor shower reigns in the night sky (+video)

Geminid meteor shower: Last night's annual meteor shower was a crowd pleaser. The Gemind meteor shower comes from debris shed by a 3-mile-wide? asteroid called 3200 Phaethon.

By Mike Wall,?Space.com / December 14, 2012

The annual Geminid meteor shower peaked overnight last night (Dec. 13), dazzling skywatchers around the world with a bounty of brilliant shooting stars.

The Geminids' peak was supposed to be good this year, as it occurred in a sky left dark by the new moon. Experts had predicted that viewers in rural areas might see 100 meteors per hour early Friday morning (Dec. 14) ? and perhaps even more.

Judging by the reactions of some SPACE.com readers, the Geminids did not disappoint.

"What an incredible show we had here!" Sean Parker, who watched the shower early Friday just west of Tucson, Ariz., told SPACE.com via email. "I was able to see about 50 per hour." [Photos: Geminid Meteors of 2012]

Parker constructed a gorgeous composite image of about 30 frames, which captured dozens of shooting stars streaking through the skies above a saguaro-studded desert mountain.

"This image took a lot of work, as I had to scroll through about 400 frames and find which frames had shooting stars in them, then cut out every meteor and blend," Parker said.

Skywatchers on the other side of the world were enthralled by the Geminids as well.

"Awesome experience," said Mumbai, India-based Swaroop Hangal, who also captured a photo of a fast-moving meteor.

"Today, I had planned to see 50 streaks and then quit with or without a pic," Hangal said. "Had almost lost hope when I could capture the 50th one, just between Betelgeuse at the bottom & Alhena in the Gemini constellation."

The Geminids? so named because they appear to emanate from the constellation Gemini (The Twins) ? are one of the most dependably impressive annual meteor showers.

They result when Earth plows through debris shed by a 3-mile-wide (5 kilometers) asteroid called 3200 Phaethon. These tiny particles burn up in our planet's atmosphere, leaving bright streaks in the sky to commemorate their passing.

The Geminids' source is unusual for?meteor showers, which are typically caused by streams of sloughed-off comet particles. Debris streams from the famous Halley's Comet, for example, produce the Orionids every October and the Eta Aquarids, which peak in early May.

If you missed the Geminid peak last night, don't fret; you still have a few days to catch the shower this year. The Geminids should linger until Sunday (Dec. 16) or so before fizzling out completely.

Editor's Note: If you take a photo of this year's Geminids that you'd like to share with SPACE.com for a possible story or gallery, please send it, along with your comments, to spacephotos@space.com.

'Private Practice' to end with Addison's wedding

Carol Kaelson / ABC

Kate Walsh's Addison and Benjamin Bratt's Jake will tie the knot in the "Private Practice" series finale.

By Lesley Goldberg, The Hollywood Reporter

Wedding bells will be ringing on the "Private Practice"?series finale.

The ABC medical drama from "Grey's Anatomy"?creator?Shonda Rhimes?will wrap its six seasons on Jan. 22 with Addison Montgomery's (Kate Walsh) dream wedding to Jake Reilly (Benjamin Bratt),?The Hollywood Reporter?has learned.

More from THR: 'Private Practice' Cast Plays 'Death, Wedding or Baby'

"Shonda had hinted and indicated that?that's probably where it would go and I knew that she'd deliver and make it an amazing episode," star Walsh told? The Hollywood Reporter. "It was clear she wanted to give Addison her happy ending. After all Addison has suffered and struggled with throughout the series -- all the heartache and hardship -- Shonda really wanted to have her find a meaningful relationship and she got to have her child and find a guy that was her match."

After opening the season with a decision to pick Jake over Sam (Taye Diggs), Addison -- who adopted son Henry in season five -- moved closer to having the fairy tale life she's dreamed of for more than eight and a half years, dating back to the character's origin on "Grey's Anatomy.:

More from THR: 'Private Practice' to End After 13-Episode Sixth Season

"The show is about Addison Montgomery's life and it's kind of a fairy tale so it's certainly an appropriate ending that she gets the baby and the marriage -- she gets the guy and she gets the happiness," co-star Bratt told?THR.?"Audiences have not only been rooting for that but they'll be gratified to see that's finally what she does receive."

Showrunner Rhimes?told?THR?in August ahead of what would become the final season of "Private"?that the character deserved "some semblance of a happy ending."

"We're not going to end the show and the 13 episodes with Addison dead; that's not going to happen," she said ahead of the season six premiere. "That character has been on such a journey and started out so hated by audiences and became so beloved by audiences that I feel like she's been on an emotional journey to change who she is from being this woman who cheated on her husband to a different person. You're just going to see what happens. I don't think it's going to be a dark ending."

More from THR: 'Private Practice': Intervention and 'What Happened to Charlotte King' Among Cast, Creator's Favorites

Meanwhile, Walsh -- who's working hard on the?NBC comedy?she's developing with boyfriend?Chris Case?-- says the series finale won't be entirely about Addison and Jake.?

"It can't just be viewed as Addison getting married off and getting the fairy tale," she said, noting there are some "juciy" surprises coming. "It's a holistic thing; it's a wrap up of the entire series. That's certainly part of it but it's very profound and meaningful the way Shonda wraps up all the characters and story lines and that's certainly a part of it. It will be very emotional for fans and very satisfying."?

The series finale, fittingly titled "In Which We Say Goodbye," airs Jan. 22 at 10 p.m. on ABC.

11 SEO Malpractices You Should Avoid At Any Cost - Web Design ...

Businesses use several methods to attract customers and improve brand presence online. Driving targeted traffic to the company?s website remains one of the most effective ways to do this. SEO still remains one of the most effective and sought after methods for driving traffic to a website or blog.

SEO Malpractices to Avoid

How we do SEO has changed significantly in the past few years. Recent updates to Google?s algorithm have changed the way businesses build links and do SEO in general. In this article we take a look at SEO tactics that have a negative effect on your SEO efforts.

Here are ten SEO tactics your business should avoid at any cost. These methods harm your ranking on prominent search engines like Google, Bing and Yahoo.

1. Keyword Stuffing

It is generally accepted that keywords should occur a few times within your web page content. Some businesses however take this too far and attempt to stuff the web page with multiple occurrences of keywords at the cost of natural language. Businesses should avoid stuffing keywords This can damage your optimisation efforts. Try to use synonyms instead of repeating the same phrase and spread them throughout the page instead.

SEO Methods to Avoid - Keyword Stuffing

2. Low Quality Blogs

This occurs when a business set-up several low quality blogs on free blog platforms with the sole intention of generating back-links or diverting traffic to their company?s website or to their primary blog. On many occasions, software or online services are used to post or replicate content automatically to all the blogs. The result is usually multiple low quality blogs with duplicate content and tons of back links. Although this technique can get you a lot of back-links, these links will be of a low quality and can actually harm your ranking on Google. It is also bad for branding.

3. Content Spinning

Content spinning is an SEO technique whereby multiple low quality versions of the same content is created and published on multiple sites to obtain back-links and dive referral traffic. Spinning poor quality versions of the same content to trick search engine crawlers into believing the content is unique should be avoided at any cost. If you want to reuse content, spend some time to offer a different spin or cover the same topic from a new angle.

4. Comment Spamming

Blog commenting is a very effective way to build back links and drive traffic to your website. It also gets extra exposure for your brand and gets your business noticed online. However, it is important to comment on quality blogs only that are relevant to your niche and to make sure your comments add value to the discussion. Comment spamming i.e. commenting on irrelevant blogs or leaving poor quality comments purely for the same of back links should be avoided.

SEO Methods to Avoid - Comments Spam

5. Domain Squatting

Domain squatting is a technique where a business registers several domains to benefit from referral traffic and back links.

Some businesses purchase many exact match domains that are easier to rank for the desired keywords and then use to redirect users towards their company?s website. ?Others get domain names that contain popular branded names with the intention of benefiting from the association. It is important for businesses to avoid this practice as Google has recently updated its algorithms to penalise businesses for using exact match domains with this intention.

6. Leveraging Misspelt Domain Names

This happens when a business tries to take advantage of popular, high traffic domain names by registering commonly misspelt versions of the original name. This technique is not only frowned upon by Google but is also damages your company?s credibility and brand.

7. Buying Links

Some businesses make the mistake of buying links from other websites in order to influence their website?s rank on search engines. If not done correctly, this has? a very high likelihood of getting penalised by Google.? Google recommends using the?no-follow? attribute with your purchased links to avoid being penalised whist still benefiting from traffic. This informs search engines not to pass link juice that influences the rank on search results.

8. Multiple Mirror Sites

Another common SEO malpractice is setting up multiple mirror sites with identical content. This is typically done in order to build an online presence for each of the mirror sites and then divert users back towards the primary website, or to obtain back-links in bulk. Google treats this as duplicate content and can penalise your website for this practice.

9. Content Scraping

Content scraping occurs when content is scraped in bulk from other external websites in direct violation of copyright laws. In most cases, this is done without crediting the author, and without linking back to the original source which is. In addition to getting penalised by Google, you can be fined for copyright infringement, if the owner of the original content decides to pursue the matter legally.

10. Social Media Automation Overuse

If done correctly, social media automation can prove very beneficial for businesses. While there is nothing wrong in using tools to automatically post new content from your website or blog to your social media profiles, overuse of automation can be detrimental to your brand and have a negative effect on your Internet marketing efforts.

The perfect example of overuse is automatically sending a tweet or posting to your Faceook page every few minutes, with the intention of profiting from back-links and referral traffic. Automation should be used alongside manual updates, and not as a replacement.

11. Lack of Anchor Text Variation in Back-links

Building quality back-links to a website is one of the most important factors for improving your search engine rank. The use of keywords in the anchor text of back links is a common SEO practice to improve the rank for that keyword. However, recently Google has updated its algorithms and has started to penalize websites for using identical anchor text as it appears unnatural. It has hence become essential to use variations and synonyms where possible.

SEO Methods to Avoid - Same Anchor Text

Conclusion

SEO is still one of the most effective ways to drive traffic to a website. However, the way we do SEO is changing. Search engines are becoming increasingly inept at recognising practices that are aimed solely at influencing search engine rank and have started penalizing websites for it. Discussed above are ten such SEO practices that your business must avoid at any cost. This will ensure a natural improvement in your search engine rank over time and reduce the risk of such penalties.

Security exploit opens Samsung Galaxy S III, Note II to attack, could let apps from Google Play write to Kernel

Amid the XDA community's ongoing quest to root every Android handset it comes across, one forum user appears to have found a serious exploit that affects certain Exynos devices. While fiddling with his Galaxy S III, XDA user Alephzain discovered a way to obtain root without flashing with Odin. The Samsung kernel apparently allows read / write access to all physical memory on the device, including the kernel itself. This makes for an easy root, Alephzain writes, but leaves devices open to attack -- allowing Kernel code injections and RAM dumps from malware-laden apps from the Google Play store.

It isn't the only avenue for attack on an Android handset, but it is an exceedingly easy attack. Luckily, a community fostered fix seems pretty simple too -- XDA user RyanZA has already created a patch to modify write permissions on affected devices -- though Galaxy S III users are reporting that the fix cripples the phone's camera app. So far, Alephzain has confirmed that the Galaxy S II, III, Note II and the Meizu MX are at risk, but notes that the exploit might work on any device running a Exynos 4210 or 4412 processor. Samsung has not yet made a comment about the vulnerability, but forum members say that the issue has been reported. As for the exploit's lasting implications? Head on over to the XDA forums to join the discussion.

Update: François Simond (aka Supercurio) wastes no time plugging holes, and has already released a root-free fix for the vulnerability. Simond's solution is wrapped up in a simple APK, and requires no root, no flashing and no special know-how. It can be enabled or disabled manually, too -- allowing Galaxy S III users to regain full use of their front-facing camera, which as previously stated, is disrupted by the fix. Best of all, it's free -- skip on over to Project Voodoo at the source to get protected.

Black women battle obesity with dialogue, action | World News ...

WASHINGTON (AP) ? Nicole Ari Parker was motivated by frustration. For Star Jones, it was a matter of life or death. Toni Carey wanted a fresh start after a bad breakup.

All three have launched individual campaigns that reflect an emerging priority for African-American women: finding creative ways to combat the obesity epidemic that threatens their longevity.

African-American women have the highest obesity rate of any group of Americans. Four out of five black women have a body mass index above 25 percent, the threshold for being overweight or obese, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. By comparison, nearly two-thirds of Americans overall are in this category, the CDC said.

Many black women seem to not be be bothered that they are generally heavier than other Americans.

Calorie-rich, traditional soul food is a staple in the diets of many African-Americans, and curvy black women are embraced positively through slang praising them as ?thick? with a ?little meat on their bones,? or through songs like the Commodore?s ?Brick House? or ?Bootylicious? by Destiny?s Child. A study by the Kaiser Family Foundation and The Washington Post earlier this year found that 66 percent of overweight black women had high self-esteem, while 41 percent of average-sized or thin white women had high self-esteem.

Still, that doesn?t mean black women reject the need to become healthier.

Historically black, all-female Spelman College in Atlanta is disbanding its NCAA teams and devoting those resources to a campus-wide wellness program. In an open letter announcing Spelman?s ?wellness revolution,? president Beverly Daniel Tatum cited a campus analysis that found many of Spelman?s 2,100 students already have high blood pressure, Type 2 diabetes or other chronic ailments.

?Spelman has an opportunity to change the health trajectory of our students and, through their influence, the communities from which they come,? Tatum?s letter said.

Jones, who underwent open heart surgery in 2010 at age 47 and now urges awareness about heart disease among black women, was met by an overflow crowd earlier this year when she convened a Congressional Black Caucus Foundation panel on black women and obesity.

?We have to get ourselves out of being conditioned to think that using soft words so we don?t hurt peoples? feelings is doing them any favor,? Jones said. ?Curvy, big-boned, hefty, full-figured, fluffy, chubby. Those are all words designed to make people feel better about themselves. That wasn?t helpful to me.?

Jones once embraced being large and fabulous, at 5 feet 5 inches tall and 300 pounds. But under that exterior, she said, she was morbidly obese, suffering from extreme fatigue, nausea, lightheadedness, heart palpitations and blurred vision. The attorney and TV personality also had gastric bypass surgery in 2003.

Now, she advises women to make simple changes such as reducing salt intake, exercising 30 minutes a day, quitting smoking, controlling portion sizes and making nutritious dietary choices.

Nutritionist and author Rovenia M. Brock, known professionally as Dr. Ro, agrees with Jones. She said getting active is only about 20 percent of the fight against obesity. The rest revolves around how much people eat.

?Our plates are killing us,? she said.

Brock said ?food deserts,? or urban areas that lack quality supermarkets, are a real obstacle. She suggested getting around that by carpooling with neighbors to stores in areas with higher-quality grocery options or buying food in bulk. She also suggested growing herbs and vegetables in window-box gardens.

?Stop focusing on what?s not there, or what you think is not there,? Brock said. ?We have to get out of this wimpy, ?woe is me? mentality.?

While first lady Michelle Obama has encouraged exercise through her ?Let?s Move? campaign targeting childhood obesity, the spark for this current interest among black women may have been comments last year by Surgeon General Regina Benjamin, who observed publicly that women must stop allowing concern about their hair to prevent them from exercising.

Some black women visit salons as often as every two weeks, investing several hours and anywhere from $50 to hundreds of dollars each visit ? activity that, according to the Black Owned Beauty Supply Association, helps fuel a $9 billion black hair care and cosmetics industry.

In an interview during a health conference in Washington last week, Benjamin said the damage sweat can inflict on costly hairstyles can affect women?s willingness to work out, and she hopes to change that. She goes to beauty industry conferences to encourage stylists to create exercise-friendly hairdos.

?I wouldn?t say we use it as an excuse, we use it as a barrier,? Benjamin said. ?And that?s not one of the barriers anymore. We?re always going to have problems with balancing our lives, but we could take that one out.?

Parker, an actress who starred in ?A Streetcar Named Desire? on Broadway earlier this year, understands this dilemma well. Out of personal frustration over maintaining both her workout and her hair, she created ?Save Your Do? Gymwrap ? a headband that can be wrapped around the hair in a way that minimizes sweat and preserves hairstyles.

?Not just as a black woman, but as a woman, since the beginning of time, beauty has been our responsibility,? Parker said in an interview. Because of that, she said, exercise has become linked with vanity instead of health.

?We?ve turned exercise into a weight-loss regimen,? Parker said. ?No. Exercise is about being grateful for the body you have and sustaining the life you have. ? Take all the hype out of the exercise and think of it as brushing your teeth.?

With their mutual family histories of diabetes and high blood pressure in mind, Carey, 28, and her sorority sister Ashley Hicks, 29, co-founded the running club Black Girls Run. Carey also considered it a new beginning after a bad breakup and a move across country. Since 2009, Black Girls Run has amassed 52,000 members who serve as a support system for runners.

Black Girls Run has about 60 groups nationwide that coordinate local races in Atlanta, New York, San Francisco, Washington, D.C, Houston and Greensboro, N.C. Most groups run at least five times a week. Next month, the national running club will take its first ?Black Girls Run ? Preserve the Sexy? tour to cities with high obesity rates. The tour includes health and fitness clinics with information on nutrition, hair maintenance and running gear.

?We found that when you want to get healthy and when you want to be active, it?s intimidating,? Carey said. ?You don?t know where to start. There?s a little coaxing that has to go along with that.?

Parker said once African-American women place value on their bodies and longevity, everything else will follow. It costs her nothing, she said, to walk around an outdoor track with her husband, actor Boris Kodjoe, or run up and down stairs at home with her headphones.

?One good step breeds another one,? Parker said. ?You?re going to have one less margarita, one less scoop of Thanksgiving macaroni ? and yet you?re not doing anything fanatical or dramatic.?

Search for answers begins after U.S. school massacre

NEWTOWN, Connecticut (Reuters) - People in the small Connecticut community of Newtown grieved on Saturday over one of the worst mass shootings in U.S. history and police sought answers about what drove a 20-year-old gunman to slaughter 20 children at an elementary school.

The attacker, identified by law enforcement sources as Adam Lanza, opened fire on Friday morning at Sandy Hook Elementary School, which teaches children aged 5 to 10. He is suspected of killing 26 people at the school before turning the gun on himself, as well as killing one other person at another nearby site.

Police said the other adult was found dead at a related crime scene in the town. Many media outlets reported it may have been the shooter's mother, Nancy Lanza, who legally owned a Sig Sauer and a Glock, both handguns of models commonly used by police, and a military-style Bushmaster .223 M4 carbine.

Law enforcement officials believe Adam Lanza used at least some of those weapons.

Nancy Lanza was an avid gun collector who once showed him a "really nice, high-end rifle" that she had purchased, said Dan Holmes, owner of a landscaping business who recently decorated her yard with Christmas garlands and lights. "She said she would often go target shooting with her kids."

Crime-scene investigators worked through the night, and state police said they hoped to have more information by Saturday morning, including confirmation of the victims' identities.

President Barack Obama urged Americans on Saturday to join in solidarity as they mourned the victims, saying the hearts of parents across the country were "heavy with hurt."

Obama, in his weekly radio and Internet address, called for "meaningful action to prevent more tragedies like this," but stopped short of specifically calling for tighter gun-control laws.

The president wiped away tears in a television address on Friday, telling the nation, "Our hearts are broken."

The holiday season tragedy was the second shooting rampage in the United States this week and the latest in a series of mass killings this year.

It revived a debate about gun-control in a country with a flourishing firearms culture and a strong lobby that has discouraged most politicians from any major efforts to address the easy availability of guns and ammunition.

'JUST BRUTAL'

Newtown, an affluent town about 80 miles northeast of New York City, was mourning its dead in community vigils.

"We're just praying - just need to pray to God that this does not happen again, no matter where," Amelia Adams, 76, said on her way into St. Rose of Lima Catholic Church with her husband Kenneth, 81.

The church, a couple of miles from the site of the shooting, was packed inside and out on Friday night with a crowd estimated at more than 1,000 people, including a large crowd outside.

"It was just, it was brutal. I can't think of a better word. It was just brutal to have to witness the pain today," Monsignor Robert Weiss said after the service.

"We opened the windows (of the church) so people could just hear and feel they could be part of it," Weiss told MSNBC on Saturday, adding, "the worst days are ahead."

"I'm sure this morning when they woke up and realized there was an empty bed in their house, it's becoming more and more real to them," Weiss said of the parents of the young victims.

Connecticut Governor Dannel Malloy told reporters late on Friday he never expected to relive the kind of grief he and others felt after the September 11 attacks on New York and Washington in 2001.

"Evil visited this community today," Malloy said.

The chaos struck as children gathered in their classrooms for morning events. The shootings took place in two rooms, police said. Witnesses reported hearing dozens of shots; some said as many as 100 rounds.

Former classmates of the shooter remembered him as a quiet loner - someone who dressed more formally than other students, often wearing khaki pants, button-down shirts and at times, a pocket protector.

"(His mother) pushed him really hard to be smarter and work harder in school," said Tim Arnone, 20, who first met Lanza at Sandy Hook.

The death toll exceeded that of one of the most notorious U.S. school shootings, the 1999 rampage at Columbine High School in Littleton, Colorado, where two teenagers murdered 13 students and staff before killing themselves.

New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg, founder of the advocacy group Mayors Against Illegal Guns, said it was "almost impossible to believe a mass shooting in a kindergarten class could happen.

"We need immediate action. We have heard all the rhetoric before. What we have not seen is leadership - not from the White House and not from Congress," Bloomberg said. "That must end today."

World leaders expressed horror as they offered condolences to the United States. Washington's arch-foe Tehran also offered its sympathies, with Iran's Foreign Ministry spokesman describing the killings as "tragic.

Pope Benedict conveyed his "heartfelt grief" through Vatican Secretary of State Cardinal Tarcisio Bertone.

"In the aftermath of this senseless tragedy, he asks God our Father to console all those who mourn and to sustain the entire community with the spiritual strength which triumphs over violence by the power of forgiveness, hope and reconciling love," Bertone said.

German Chancellor Angela Merkel said, "The news from Newtown saddens me deeply. Once again, we're completely aghast over an act that we can't comprehend. An incredible suffering has been brought to so many families so close to Christmas."

CONAKRY, Guinea (AP) ? Former supporters of President Alpha Conde announced a new opposition alliance on Friday, signaling the latest erosion in support for the leader since his 2010 election.

The defections come just months before the West African nation is due to hold long-anticipated legislative elections and raises concerns about Conde's ability to draw support from several key ethnic groups.

The alliance known as the Republican Club is headed by ex-Prime Minister Jean-Marie Dore, a former ardent Conde supporter from the minority Forestier ethnic group, one of two minority groups that buoyed Conde to victory.

Guinea's president had promised to distribute administrative posts equally between members of his alliance, including the Forestiers and to the second group, the Soussous, which they say he has failed to fulfill.

Now that he is in office, Conde, who is from the Malinke ethnicity, is accused of favoring his ethnic kin in appointments across the board, from cabinet positions right down to the janitors in ministerial buildings. The country's army is also majority-Malinke and there have been persistent accusations that the security forces target members of other ethnicities.

"The administration is violating people's rights and is doing so in the name of Alpha Conde," Dore said. "I had expected that the new government was putting an end to these practices. We have fought 20 years for that."

The former French colony had suffered decades of autocratic rule since its independence from France in 1958 until the historic 2010 vote, its first fully democratic election.

Conde ultimately defeated a Peul candidate in that election, which was overwhelmingly carried out along ethnic lines that sparked violence between Peul and Malinke voters. Although there are no accurate census figures, most experts say that the Peul and the Malinke each represent roughly 30 to 40 percent of the population, and together they make-up as much as 60 to 80 percent of the electorate.

The 2010 election, therefore, came down to the support of the Soussous and the Forestier and Conde won the runoff after winning over members of the smaller ethnic groups. Friday's new political alliance suggests Conde may be losing support from those groups.

However, Mohammed Makanera Al Kake, a spokesman for the president's party called the new alliance "a non-event."

"This does not bother us at all because today all decent Guineans appreciate the real value of the progress shown by President Alpha Conde," he said.

In taking office, Conde inherited the financial woes from decades of fiscal mismanagement. Despite the country's vast mineral riches, it remains deeply impoverished and the cost of living has risen for the country's 10 million people.

Last year, Conde narrowly survived an assassination attempt after gunmen surrounded his home overnight and pounded his bedroom with rockets.

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE: ECOLOGIC COMPLETES FIRST TRANSACTION IN THE REPUBLIC OF ZAMBIA

Washington, DC ? December 12, 2012 ? Ecologic Leasing Services announced today that the company has completed its first equipment financing transaction in the Republic of Zambia in Southern Africa. Doug Slais, Ecologic?s Vice President of Capital Sourcing, said, ?Ox Drilling Limited in Ndola needed a new drill rig for their expanding business for approximately US $500,000. Ox also wanted to use financing as a tool to align their monthly revenues from their drilling projects to their monthly expenses for the rig and improve cash flow. Our capital sourcing team here at Ecologic worked with the manufacturer?s local sales team to listen to Ox Drilling?s requirements, evaluate their credit, and structure a transaction that met their needs.? Slais continued ?We then tapped Alios Finance in Lusaka, a member of The Global Lessor Network, to finance the transaction. James Muwowo and Ali Saib Diallo of Alios listened to the opportunity and immediately immersed themselves in the transaction. We expect to do a lot more leasing and financing transactions in Zambia, which is a leader in economic growth among the members of the Common Market for Eastern and Southern Africa (COMESA). We also expect to do a lot more with Alios. They were a great partner and easy to work with.? According to World Bank lead economist Praveen Kumar, speaking yesterday in Lukasa, Zambia?s capital, ?Zambia?s economy is expected to grow by 7.3 percent this year, slightly higher than the 6.8 percent growth rate of 2011. The economy has seen robust growth during 2012 in construction, transport and communication services, manufacturing, and agriculture,? he said. Michael Keeler, Ecologic?s CEO said, ?Ecologic Leasing Service provides equipment financing outsourcing services to global companies ? both international lessees and manufacturers. We source capital for our clients through The Global Lessor Network (GLN), a community of more than 500 lessors from around the world who are ready to provide local leasing expertise and transact with lessees that fit their credit appetite, equipment interests, and geographic footprint. That?s how we engaged Alios for this deal.? Keeler continued, ?While we run a variety of leasing programs for global manufacturers, over the last few years we have seen considerable growth from manufacturers who already have a mature vendor program that they run themselves or in partnership with an international lessor, such as DLL, CIT, GE Capital, Macquarie, or Soci?t? G?n?rale. Because the footprint of these lessors is typically limited to western industrialized and commonwealth countries, manufacturers engage Ecologic and the GLN to help them finance transactions everywhere else that they sell. Most manufacturers sell in well over 100 countries, while most of these lessors operations are limited to just 20-30 countries. Because we use local capital and expertise, we are not limited to bricks and mortar like banks. We can help our clients create incremental sales through financing in any country where they sell equipment and capital is available. So, many of our manufacturer financing programs and transactions are in emerging markets, especially Africa, Latin America, South and South-east Asia, and the Middle-East. Keeler explained how the GLN works, ?New lessors register at www.lessornetwork.com for free by completing a profile about their company and the type of transactions they want to see. Our Capital Sourcing team will then interview the lessor and review their profile. When the Capital Sourcing team accepts the lessor?s profile, it becomes immediately available in Lease Accelerator, our web-based software service, which is used by our clients around the world to manage their leasing process and perform GAAP and FASB compliant lease accounting, including Cisco, Cummins, Eaton, Allegheny Technologies and NetApp ? even not-for-profit hospital systems, such as Ascension Health use Lease Accelerator.? About Ecologic Leasing Services Ecologic Leasing Services develops, sells, and supports Lease Accelerator, a suite of software and outsourcing services for global equipment manufacturers and lessees, delivered as a service (SaaS).
