CAMP MURRAY, Wash. - The large, armored eight-wheeled Stryker vehicle became a fixture of the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan. Joint Base Lewis McChord became a center for their deployment.? Now the Washington National Guard is putting in a request with the Pentagon for Strykers that could help out in disasters.

?"You could evacuate civilians out of a flood area or even a fire area,? said Col. Alan Dorow, who, among other roles, handled logistics for the Guard during major flooding in Lewis County in 2007 that damaged and flooded I-5 and required evacuation of hundreds.

Col. Dorow is also a veteran of the 81st Armored Combat Team, a joint Washington and California Guard unit which is currently equipped with M-1 tanks and Bradley Fighting vehicles among other equipment. He deployed twice to the war in Iraq with the 81st.

Thursday, Governor Jay Inslee and Maj. Gen. Bret Daugherty, Washington's adjutant general, urged the Pentagon to convert the 81st Armored Brigade Combat Team to a Stryker brigade.

As the war winds down in Afghanistan, recently returning active duty soldiers from the 4th Brigade 2nd Infantry learned that their unit could be deactivated.

"The 81st now uses old tanks that are too heavy to use on our roads during emergencies,? said Inslee, who quoted in a National Guard press release.

He went on to say that the Strykers would not only be more practical in natural disasters from floods to fire to earthquakes, but would continue to be available in their combat role as the military continues to shift its focus to the Asia-Pacific region.

Only one National Guard unit in Pennsylvania currently uses Stryker vehicles.

Ravens TE Pitta dislocates hip, out indefinitely

Baltimore Ravens head coach John Harbaugh speaks at a news conference to announce that tight end Dennis Pitta dislocated his hip after colliding with safety James Ihedigbo at NFL football training camp in Owings Mills, Md., Saturday, July 27, 2013. The team announced that he is expected to miss their season-opening game in Denver on Sept. 5. (AP Photo/Patrick Semansky)

(AP) ? Baltimore Ravens tight end Dennis Pitta dislocated his hip in practice Saturday and will be sidelined indefinitely with what coach John Harbaugh called "a serious injury."

Pitta was carted off the field after colliding with safety James Ihedigbo in the back of the end zone vying for a pass from Joe Flacco. The receiver lay prone for several minutes before the cart arrived.

The Ravens begin defense of their Super Bowl title on Sept. 5 in Denver. Pitta will at least miss that game, Harbaugh said, but the severity of the injury could keep the tight end out for much longer than that.

The Ravens re-tweeted a story by ESPN in which a league source said Pitta would miss the entire season.

Baltimore general manager Ozzie Newsome did not immediately answer a text message from The Associated Press seeking information on Pitta's status.

After practice, a somber Harbaugh said, "Dennis has a dislocated hip. We'll have to take a look at that and see exactly what it is. It's a serious injury. He is going to be out for a while. He will not be in the Denver game and we'll just have to play it from there to see how long it goes."

Late Saturday night, a Ravens official said the club had no update from doctors or Pitta. He said the team website regularly re-tweets stories and updates from various news agencies.

Pitta was preparing for his fourth season with Baltimore. The 6-foot-4, 245-pounder caught 61 passes for 669 yards and seven touchdowns last season.

In the playoffs, Pitta had 14 catches for 163 yards and three scores.

With Pitta gone, the Ravens are without their two of their most productive receivers last year. Pitta's 61 catches were tied for second with Ray Rice behind Anquan Boldin, who was traded to San Francisco during the offseason.

"Obviously, he was a very, very productive guy for us," Ravens offensive coordinator Jim Caldwell said of Pitta. "He made a lot of big plays last year. We'll see what happens. But somebody is going to have to step up. We do have some capable guys all across the flanks. We do have some weapons. We're just going to have to have some guys make some plays for us."

In his first three NFL seasons, Pitta has 102 receptions for 1,075 yards and 10 touchdowns over 43 regular-season games.

Galaxy S4 Problem in Pairing with the Nokia Bluetooth Headset

Galaxy S4 Problem Pairing

There have been numerous complaints about the Galaxy S4 problem in pairing with Nokia Bluetooth headsets. Apparently the issue occurs as an irritating buzz or crackling noise. This is especially true when the volume is tuned high.

The people at Android Central forum and XDA Developers forum tried to tackle this issue before. But none of them seem to agree with its source.

Some of their people say that it is software, app or OS update related while others claim that it is a hardware issue. But both agree that the Galaxy S4 problem with the Nokia headset or headsets from other manufacturers is very prevalent with the GT-I9595 model of the S4 carrying the Qualcomm Snapdragon 600 processor.

We have also featured a similar story here about the crackling noise when using third-party headset. In that report, Digital Times claimed that aftermarket headphones that possess frequencies lower than 32 are prone to this issue.

But it should be noted that there is one thing that makes the cause of the Galaxy S4 problem when pairing with other headsets hard to pinpoint. That is, some units are capable of working well with third-party headphones even with Nokia. Android Authority bets though that this factor scales down to a hardware issue.

The most recommended solution for the problem is by sticking with the headphones produced by Samsung specifically for the Galaxy S4. It wouldn?t hurt also to check if there are any other apps causing the issue by entering Safe Mode and by trying out your Nokia Bluetooth headset under that setting.

I hope that the information provided here somehow helped. For more questions or suggestions, write to us at?[email?protected].

RockPile: Midnight Oil- Here Come the Mummies- White Buffalo Woman- Another Lost Year

Midnight Oil
Essential Oils

Columbia/Legacy

Fans of this Aussie band should really like this 2-CD compilation as it not only collects the band's many hits but also includes deep album tracks, including selections from before the band broke big stateside. The band put out four releases before they started racking up major sales and eight of the included tunes, including the twangy, Ventures-like instrumental "Wedding Cake Island" are drawn from those lesser-known efforts, Midnight Oil, Head Injuries, Bird Noises and Place Without a Postcard. The voice of singer Peter Garrett is instantly recognizable on the early tunes but the band had not yet polished their knack for setting politically-charged themes to radio-ready pop hooks. They found the formula in 1983 though and began a decade-long run of ruling radio and MTV with hits "Power and the Passion," "Best of Both Worlds," "Beds are Burning," "The Dead Heart," "Blue Sky Mine," "Forgotten Years" and "King of the Mountain," all included here. Midnight Oil's popularity started to wane around 1993 but the hits are bookended here by nine cuts from their most recent albums through 2000's The Real Thing.

Here Come the Mummies
Cryptic

Sphinxter

This band has a penchant for getting a little bit naughty with their lyrics (add a second "t" to the last word in "Everything But" and you get the idea) but they are not to be mistaken for a novelty act just because they call themselves Here Come the Mummies. Completely to the contrary, HCTM are a funk/pop band and Cryptic is packed with fun and hook-filled dance numbers; "Infinity" is done in the style of late-'70s disco pop but most of the album has a much earthier sound, often recalling something from Rick James, Parliament or the funky side of the Bee Gees.

White Buffalo Woman
The White Buffalo Woman EP

Beef and Cheese

Evan Rutledge, the singer for White Buffalo Woman, has a soulful voice that's similar to that of Peter Wolf of the J. Geils Band and the four tunes on this EP, the spritely pop of "On My Own," the smoky barroom pleading of "Baby Please," the somewhat eerie, organ-enhanced rocker "Because of Your Love" and the gritty "You Will See" all sound very much like deep album tracks J. Geils at their best.

Another Lost Year
Better Days

Megaforce

This alt metal quintet has a sound that is not unlike that of Nickelback but Another Lost Year doesn't have a disliked lead singer betrothed to Avril Lavigne. That means that when people talk about the band they're doing it because of the music: driving, well-written radio rockers like "What You Deserve," "Your Last Goodbye" and standout "All That We Are." With tunes that are angst-y but not angry, ALY also sounds good toned down a bit, like on "Angels" where Kiwi songstress Lish joins Clinton Cunanan at the mic and on the acoustic guitar backed and orchestrated "Come and Gone."

How our gung-ho parliament turned against military interventionism

Blair was able to win more support for a full-scale invasion than Cameron can for arming a rebel group.

David Cameron leaves 10 Downing Street in London on June 26, 2013, to attend Prime Minister's Questions. Photograph: Getty Images.

In 2003, Tony Blair made the now infamous case for the Iraq war. Despite vocal opposition from within his own party and the Lib Dems, he enjoyed the overwhelming support of Parliament. Then Conservative leader Iain Duncan Smith backed the war and so did all but 15 Tory MPs. Militaristic foreign policy bought the political elite together. The atmosphere now could not be more different. As a consensus grows around Britain?s failures in Iraq and Afghanistan, MPs are becoming increasingly sceptical of interventionism. This is epitomised by the current split in opinion over arming the Syrian rebels.

Paul Flynn, a Labour MP who campaigned against the Iraq war, told me: "The anti-war sentiment is deep-seated among all parties. Two futile wars in Iraq and Afghanistan have cost us dearly in blood and treasure."

His cynicism towards Britain?s role in the Middle East is shared by others in Parliament. Last month, Caroline Lucas led a debate in the Commons on the decision to invade Iraq, ten years on from the start of the war. The overwhelming feeling among MPs was that the government made the wrong decision.

Growing scepticism towards interventionism might also reflect Britain?s role in Libya. The 2011 action prompted little opposition (just 13 MPs voted against it) and Ed Miliband actually encouraged the government to act more quickly. Britain was better placed to intervene in Libya than in Syria; the Gaddafi regime was weaker than Assad?s and the atrocities were, at the time, seen as more 'one-sided'. The main objective of the intervention was achieved and Gaddafi was overthrown, but not all is well in post-intervention Libya. Parts of the country, particularly Benghazi, are still plagued with political violence. Many who fled at the height of the conflict are scared to return. Last month, the Libya Herald reported that 650 Libyans had refused to leave a refugee camp in Tunisia. Such reports have contributed towards the current anti-war sentiment, with MPs thinking twice before allowing Britain to support rebels in another state.

This growing movement has left David Cameron and William Hague with few allies in their attempt to argue for greater involvement in Syria. In 2003, Blair faced significant opposition when he made the case for invading Iraq, most notably from Robin Cook, who resigned from the cabinet. But he was still able to win more support for a full-scale invasion than Cameron can for arming a rebel group.

Unlikely alliances are being formed in opposition to militarism. Boris Johnson is not known for toeing the party line, but he is seldom so defiantly on the side of Ed Miliband. Last month, he warned that weapons might end up in the hands of "al-Qaeda thugs" after the Labour leader had claimed the government was too focused on arming the rebels. Eighty Tory MPs have signed a letter demanding a vote on the issue and the cabinet appears divided, with Nick Clegg and others publicly expressing their concerns.

Flynn told me: "Hague's demand that we should punch above our weight is clearly understood to lead to dying beyond our responsibilities and spending beyond our interests."

His own anti-interventionism no longer casts him as a rebel in his own party, as it did in 2003. A wind blowing through Westminster threatens to tear apart the political establishment as the Prime Minister?s critics find support from the most unlikely quarters. David Cameron may still push for increased British involvement in the Middle East but he is unlikely to have parliament ? or even his own party ? on side.

Oil price climbs after strong US jobs report

The price of oil marched higher Friday after a positive report on U.S. hiring and ongoing concerns that the crisis in Egypt might affect Mideast supplies.

In midday trading, benchmark crude for August delivery was up $1.56 to $102.80 per barrel on the New York Mercantile Exchange. On Wednesday, oil closed above at $101.24, the highest level since May 3, 2012. U.S. markets were closed Thursday for Independence Day.

Following the ouster of Egyptian president Mohammed Morsi, his supporters began a series of protests and attacks Friday. The military opened fire as hundreds of protesters marched on a headquarters of the Republican Guard

Egypt is not an oil-producer, but its control of the Suez Canal, one of the world's busiest shipping lanes, gives it a crucial role in maintaining global energy supplies.

For now supplies are moving freely through the canal.

In the U.S., employers added a robust 195,000 jobs in June and many more in April and May than previously thought. The job growth suggests a stronger economy and makes it more likely the Federal Reserve will slow its bond purchases before year's end.

Those bond purchases have supported the economy by helping keep long-term interest rates low. That in turn has given a boost to investments such as stocks and oil.

At the pump, the national average for a gallon of gas stayed at $3.48 for the third straight day. That's down 14 cents from a month ago.

Brent crude, which is used to set prices for crude oils used by many U.S. refineries, was up $1.75 to $107.29 per barrel on the ICE exchange in London.

In other energy futures trading on Nymex:

- Wholesale gasoline rose 4 cents to $2.88 per gallon.

- Natural gas fell 11 cents to $3.58 per 1,000 cubic feet.

- Heating oil added 4 cents to $2.99 a gallon.

Pablo Gorondi in Budapest contributed to this report.

Why businesses need a 13 week vision - Camrose Consulting

16039576_sIt may seem bizarre but when training to become an accountant, I was never taught how to manage cash.? ?I am sure that there are thousands of other accountants with a similar gap in their formal education; although there are some like me who have learnt through experience.

While accountants have conventions for preparing accounts, it does strike me that methods used for day to day cash management vary greatly between businesses and over the years I?ve seen the good, the not so good and the virtually nonexistent!

I generally encourage clients to prepare a weekly cash forecast covering each of the next 13 weeks.??? Many businesses may feel that they can?t realistically look more than two or three weeks ahead, so why bother to look further?

  • It focuses the mind on the sales pipeline and customer receipts.?? Simply by seeing the forecast in black and white helps ensure that there is a proper focus on these areas and can help improve performance.
  • It provides an early warning system.? Being aware of potential cash flow issues sooner rather than later makes it far easier to take corrective action than if caught out by an unexpected cash flow problem.? Forewarned is forearmed and unexpected cash problems are far more likely to cause long term damage to a business (that is assuming it survives!).
  • VAT payments are on a quarterly basis, so over 13 weeks you?ll always factor in a VAT payment, which may help avoid nasty shocks!
  • If actual cash turns out to below expectations, there is probably a problem in the business that you don?t know about (think about it!).?? ?However, it does help to have a means of working out your cash expectations!

While forecasts should be more accurate in the short term, moving out there will be less visibility and one thing is ?certain, actual outcomes will differ from forecasts. ?Having said that best estimates are better than no estimates! ?In driving parlance, the possibility of there being an unexpected traffic jam wouldn?t stop someone from looking at a map to plan a journey.

Ford, Egan win literary medals

NEW YORK (AP) ? Richard Ford and Timothy Egan, winners of literary medals presented by the American Library Association, both credit libraries for making their work possible.

Ford and Egan are this year's recipients of the Andrew Carnegie Medal for Excellence for the best works of fiction and nonfiction. Ford was cited for the novel "Canada," narrated by the teen son of bank robbers. Egan won for "Short Nights of the Shadow Catcher," a biography of photographer Edward Curtis, who compiled an encyclopedic archive of North American Indians.

Egan, a prize-winning author and reporter for The New York Times, noted in a recent interview that libraries were a vital part of his research for the Curtis book. Curtis, who died in 1952, had compiled a 20-volume set of his Indian photographs. Few copies exist today, but Egan managed to look through the pictures at the University of Washington library in Seattle.

"It was really magical," said Egan, winner of the National Book Award in 2006 for "The Worst Hard Time," a history of those lived through the Dust Bowl during the Great Depression. "You have to put on these white gloves and look very carefully through this glowing, magical achievement. Libraries, in many ways, are the keepers of our stories."

Ford, a Pulitzer Prize-winning novelist, recalled that he grew up down the street from a Carnegie library in Jackson, Miss. His mother would leave him there at times, considering it a safe place for a child.

"I got an introduction there to what books were, why books were important," said Ford, who now regularly donates books to the library near his home in Maine.

Ford and Egan each will receive $5,000, and finalists each receive $1,500. In fiction, they were Junot Diaz for "This Is How You Lose Her" and Louise Erdrich for "The Round House." In nonfiction: David Quammen for "Spillover" and Jill Lepore for "The Mansion of Happiness." The Carengie medals were established in 2012 and are funded through a grant by the Carnegie Corporation.
