Mississippi newspaper owner defends gay marriage cover story

(The Laurel Leader-Call)

A newspaper in rural Mississippi is defending its decision to run a cover story on what it called the first same sex marriage in the county it serves.

On Feb. 7, the Laurel Leader-Call published the story--"Historic Wedding: Women wed in Laurel through smiles, tears"--about the wedding of Jessica Powell and Crystal Craven, who has been battling brain cancer. The women exchanged vows earlier this month at a ceremony in Laurel, Miss., attended by family, friends and Craven's doctors.

"If chemo doesn't work, we don't know what happens after that," Craven told the paper.

"This is true love," Powell said. "Love is love, it knows no gender."

She added: "I don't remember voting on straight marriage, so why is gay marriage an issue?"

The story sparked a backlash among readers in a state that does not legally recognize same sex marriage.

"We shouldn't have to defend every decision we make here at the Leader-Call," Jim Cegielski, the paper's owner, wrote in an editorial published on Saturday. "However, the intense reaction to our gay wedding front page story, which led to a deluge of hate calls, letters. e-mails, Facebook posts, soundoffs and random cross stares thrown in my direction, warrants some sort of response. So here it is."

Cegielski continued:

We were well aware that the majority of people in Jones County are not in favor of gay marriage. However, any decent newspaper with a backbone can not base decisions on whether to cover a story based on whether the story will make people angry.

The job of a community newspaper is not pretending something didn't take place or ignoring it because it will upset people. No, our job is to inform reads what is going on in our own and let them make their own judgments. That is exactly what we did with the wedding story. Our reporter heard about the wedding, attended it, interviewed some of the participants and wrote a news story. If there had been protestors at the wedding, we would have covered that the exact same way ? but there weren't any. We never said it was a good thing or a bad thing, we simply did our job by telling people what took place.

I took the bulk of the irate phone calls from people who called the paper to complain. Most of the complaints seem to revolve around the headline, "Historic Wedding," and the fact that we chose to put the story on the front page. My answer to the "Historic Wedding" headline is pretty simple. You don't have like something to be historic.

"The holocaust, bombing of Pearl Harbor and the Black Sox scandal are all historic. I'm in no way comparing the downtown wedding of two females to any of those events," Cegielski wrote, "even though some of you made it quite clear that you think gay marriage is much worse."

We have stories about child molesters, murders and all kinds of vicious, barbaric acts of evil committed by heinous criminals on our front page and yet we never receive a call from anyone saying 'I don't need my children reading this.' Never. Ever. However, a story about two women exchanging marriage vows and we get swamped with people worried about their children.

I had at least 20 or so readers express to me they think gay marriage is "an abomination against God." We never said it wasn't. We never said it was.

Cegielski's letter to readers (Leader-Call)

"We were simply reporting to the best of our ability," he continued. "However, I can't help but be saddened by the hate-filled viciousness of many of the comments directed toward our staff ? No one here deserves to be berated or yelled at simply because we were doing our job." Fifteen readers cancelled their subscriptions in protest, according to the Cegielski.

"You have every right to cancel your subscription," he added. "But you have no right to berate and belittle anyone on our staff."

NASA telescope spots smallest planet yet

Located some 210 light years from Earth, Kepler-37b is only slightly larger than our moon, making it the smallest planet ever discovered.

This artist's illustration compares the planets in the Kepler-37 system to the moon and planets in our solar system. NASA's Kepler mission has discovered a new planetary system that is home to the smallest planet yet found around a star like our sun.

Astronomers have found a mini planet beyond our solar system that is the smallest of more than 800 extra-solar planets discovered, scientists said on Wednesday.

The planet, known as Kepler-37b, is one of three circling a yellow star similar to the sun that is located in the constellation Lyra, about 210 light years away. One light year is about 6 trillion miles (10 trillion km).

"We see very large planets and they're uncommon. Earth-sized planets seen to be pNASAretty common, so our guess is that small planets must be even more common," said Thomas Barclay, with NASA's Ames Research Center in Mountain View, California.

The smaller the planet, the more difficult it is to find.

Kepler-37b, as well as two sibling planets, were discovered with a NASA space telescope of the same name, which studies light from about 150,000 sun-like stars.

The Kepler telescope works by detecting slight dips in the amount of light coming from target stars caused by orbiting planets passing by, or transiting, relative to the observatory's line of sight. The smaller the planet, the less pronounced the dip.

Of the 833 confirmed planets found beyond the solar system, 114 were discovered by the Kepler science team, according to the project's website. Nearly 3,000 more Kepler candidate planets are being analyzed.

Planets located in "habitable zones" around their host stars, where water can exist on their surfaces, are of particular interest. Water is believed to be necessary for life.

A planet positioned about where Earth orbits the sun would take a year to fly around its parent star. At least two, and preferably three or more, orbits are needed to confirm that a transit spotted by the Kepler telescope is indeed a planet and not a star flare or some other phenomenon.

Kepler-37b flies about 10 times closer to its star than Earth circles the sun, which gives it a surface temperature of about 800 degrees Fahrenheit (427 degrees Celsius).

"This particular one is nowhere near habitable," University of Florida astronomer Eric Ford said.

Mercury is the closet planet to the sun in our solar system, so scientists compared Kepler-37b to a mini Mercury.

The little planet, which is slightly larger than Earth's moon, has two somewhat larger siblings. Kepler-37c, which is slightly smaller than Venus, circles the trio's parent star in 21 days and Kepler-37d, about twice the size of Earth, orbits in 40 days.

The whole system would fit within the orbit of Mercury, which circles the sun in 88 days.

"When we first found exo-planets, they were all much larger than anything we have in the inner solar system. We didn't know of anything that was smaller. This is the first time we've been able to probe the smallest range, smaller than anything we have in our solar system," Barclay said.

The research was published in this week's Nature.

Record-breaking 320-gigapixel panorama of London is a cause for celebration, vertigo

320gigapixel panorama of London

While the Shard might be the new darling of London's skyline, the BT Tower's still got a few tricks up its sleeve -- such as this record-breaking 320 gigapixel panorama of the English capital. In total 48,640 images, shot with four Canon EOS 7D cameras were stitched together to create this 360 vista. Want a little more perspective? It's said that if this were a physical image, it would be almost as large as Buckingham Palace -- or if you prefer -- 60,000 times larger than an average iPhone photo. Of course, what good would a gigapixel image be without a where's waldo-style hunt? So, UK residents who have a keen eye can try spotting BT's Buzby mascot for the chance of winning some prizes. Us? We're just trying to hunt down a cab. Set your sights on the source for big picture.

BT TOWER BREAKS WORLD RECORD FOR PANORAMIC PHOTO
To see the gigapixel image and share your favourite views of London visit: www.btlondon2012.co.uk

An amazing image of London taken from the top of the BT Tower has set a new record for the world's largest panoramic photo. The image shows a full 360 degree view of London in incredible detail.
The 320 gigapixel image, taken by expert photography firm 360Cities, comprises 48,640 individual frames, using four, state of the art Canon EOS 7D cameras with EF 400mm f/2.8L IS II USM lenses and Extender EF 2x III teleconverters, provided by Canon. The cameras were driven by high end Rodeon VR Head ST robotic panorama heads, from the Clauss company in Germany. The individual images have been stitched into a single, gigantic panorama over a period of weeks by a powerful Celsius R920 workstation, provided by Fujitsu Technology Solutions Europe.

It is the first time that an image of this magnitude has ever been attempted, and it took several months to create due to the scale of the endeavour. If printed at normal photographic resolution, the BT Tower panorama would be 98 meters across and 24 meters tall, almost as big as Buckingham Palace. In comparison, the last record attempt for a London panorama was 80 gigapixels, taken from Centrepoint in 2010.
The images were taken after the end of London 2012, the first digital Games. Londoners, tourists and those who work in the capital are now being asked to share their favourite views of the capital, as a permanent record of London's year in the global spotlight.

As the official communications services partner for London 2012, BT played a vital role in ensuring the Games were the most connected ever, with millions of people enjoying sharing their experiences of the sporting and cultural action via social media. BT Tower played its part in the celebration, sharing news of every single medal won, live stats and scores on its giant 360 degree LED screen.
Suzi Williams, director, BT Group Marketing & Brand, said, "The BT Tower is such an iconic London landmark, and became a focus for the capital's celebrations in 2012, what better way to capture that remarkable year than with a full panoramic photograph taken from its roof. This isn't just a world record for the BT Tower, it's for London and the people who live, work in or visit the capital. Take a look, and share your favourite London places and landmarks."

Steve Hercher, director, 360Cities, said, "We were honoured to be chosen by BT to attempt this world record panorama and make our own contribution to commemorating the wonderful London 2012 Games. So many unknowns and variables had to be addressed in the planning of this unprecedented shoot, really the first of its kind. Software and hardware were pushed to the limits, and rain, wind and other potential stumbling blocks had to be dealt with. Our photography team of Jeffrey Martin, Tom Mills and Holger Schulze did an amazing job and not a single individual frame from the more than 48,000 planned was missed."

Rainer Fuehres, Head of Consumer Imaging Group, Canon Europe, said: "The goal of empowering people to take the next step on their personal photographic journeys drives every product we create, and this breath-taking image truly takes this philosophy to the extreme. Since its launch, the EOS 7D has caught the imagination of enthusiasts around the world so we were pleased to support such an exciting and challenging project with a camera that so many people are using to capture their own moments of inspiration."

Also, our old friend Buzby is hiding in the gigapixel image too. Find him, and you could be one of three winners in our competition. People are selected at random, the first winner will receive an iPad, a year's free broadband, and a trip to the top of the BT Tower to see the view in person. Second and third place win an iPad. California community colleges now offer more transfer degrees, but still far to go

California community colleges now offer more than 550 associate degrees that guarantee admission to California State University campuses but that number is still far short of the goal set by college leaders, officials said Wednesday.

About 557 degrees have been developed in 22 majors, such as anthropology, computer science, English, art history, geology and theater arts, with Spanish, engineering, biology, chemistry and sociology soon to be approved, officials said during a media briefing Wednesday.

The new transfer arrangement stems from legislation adopted in 2010. The Student Transfer Achievement Reform Act requires the two-year colleges to develop associate?s degrees that will guarantee students admission with junior standing into similar bachelor?s degree programs at the four-year Cal State schools.

Students with the new transfer degree would need only 60 more semester units to complete a bachelor's of arts or a bachelor's of science at Cal State.

The degrees approved so far represent about one-third of the 1,600 programs planned across California?s 112 community colleges. The system?s Board of Governors has set an ambitious goal of having degrees approved in 80% of majors by next fall and 100% by fall 2014.

?They are making a valiant effort to do as many degrees as they can by the end of the year,? said Barry Russell, vice chancellor for academic affairs for community colleges.

The issue is timely as college leaders, the Legislature and Gov. Jerry Brown look for ways to move community college students more quickly toward graduation and transfer to four-year schools.

Streamlining the process could save an estimated $160 million annually and free up access for an additional 40,000 community college students and 14,000 Cal State students, said community colleges Deputy Chancellor Erik Skinner.

Recent reports by the Campaign for College Opportunity, which sponsored the transfer degree legislation, and the state Legislative Analyst?s Office found significant progress but also uneven implementation, with some community colleges lagging in developing degrees and some Cal State campuses hesitant to accept them.

Officials are hoping that competition will accelerate the process, particularly in such urban areas as Los Angeles, where students have a choice of multiple colleges that are nearby.

Jake Counts, a psychology student at Bakersfield College, is hoping that the transfer degree?s promise of greater admission priority will help smooth his path to Cal State Bakersfield. Counts learned about the degree program from a counselor and is now expected to transfer in 2014.

?Before I had just been taking a lot of random classes,? said Counts, 21. ?It would be awesome to go from Bakersfield College and say, now I?m shooting for my bachelor?s.?

Introduction

There are an enormous number of libraries and toolkits for Silverlight (.NET) that can be used while developing Windows Phone applications. This article lists libraries that have been found useful by members of this community (see discussion boards).

Almost like a never ending list it may, over time, contain projects that are outdated. Although it is a comprehensive list, it may not suffice all development needs. In such a case it is recommended to search internet, particularly the following sites - Nokia Projects, codeplex and GitHub. It would be great if a library worthy of this list could be recommended and added, as and when discovered/developed.

UI controls and components

Games and Physics Engines

Web Services & Cloud Storage

Tools to access common/important web services and APIs.

Developer Tools

Cross Platform Development Tools
