Various organizations for ophthalmology and eye care have come up with a guideline for the better care of contact lenses. Here are some of the most significant.

• Wash your hand with soap and water and dry them before handling your contacts.
• Do not rinse or store your contacts in tap water, saliva, saline solution, or rewetting drops.
• Wear and use your contact lenses according to the directions of your eye doctor.
• During cleaning, rub your contacts with your fingers.
• Rinse the contact lenses with fresh solution and leave the case open to air dry.
• Keep your contact lens case clean and change it regularly, at least once in every 3 months.

In some cases, eye infections may lead to irreversible vision loss. This makes it very important that you also take care of you eyes.

• Remove your contacts and immediately consult an eye doctor if you experience pain, redness, tearing, swelling, discharge, blurry vision, and increased light sensitivity.
• Stop smoking if you do. Smoking can cause problems to your eyes and your vision.
• Decorative lenses sold at costume shops can be harmful to the eyes. Beware of using them.
• Have regular eye check-ups. If you wear contacts lenses or have other problems, visit your eye doctor at least once yearly.

Most contact lenses expire within one year so make sure that you get them changed regularly. Your visits to the doctor can also help in the reinforcement of proper lens care.
