ASPEN, Colo. (AP) ? Lindsey Vonn overcame an error and exhaustion in her return to World Cup racing after missing time with an intestinal illness that landed her in the hospital.

The four-time overall champion finished the first run of the giant slalom Saturday in 10th place and trails leader Tina Maze of Slovenia by 1.95 seconds heading into the second run. Maze won the season opening GS race last month.

Vonn nearly made a costly mistake on the challenging course, but managed to recover. It required all the energy a weakened Vonn had left, causing her to lose time through the last 10 gates. Vonn recently returned to training after being hit by the stomach bug.

Maria Hoefl-Riesch of Germany hit a gate, bruising her upper left arm and ending her day.

Hubble eyes a loose spiral galaxy

ScienceDaily (Nov. 23, 2012) ? The NASA/ESA Hubble Space Telescope has spotted the spiral galaxy ESO 499-G37, seen here against a backdrop of distant galaxies, scattered with nearby stars.

The galaxy is viewed from an angle, allowing Hubble to reveal its spiral nature clearly. The faint, loose spiral arms can be distinguished as bluish features swirling around the galaxy's nucleus. This blue tinge emanates from the hot, young stars located in the spiral arms. The arms of a spiral galaxy have large amounts of gas and dust, and are often areas where new stars are constantly forming.

The galaxy's most characteristic feature is a bright elongated nucleus. The bulging central core usually contains the highest density of stars in the galaxy, where typically a large group of comparatively cool old stars are packed in this compact, spheroidal region.

One feature common to many spiral galaxies is the presence of a bar running across the center of the galaxy. These bars are thought to act as a mechanism that channels gas from the spiral arms to the center, enhancing the star formation.

Recent studies suggest that ESO 499-G37's nucleus sits within a small bar up to a few hundreds of light-years along, about a tenth the size of a typical galactic bar. Astronomers think that such small bars could be important in the formation of galactic bulges since they might provide a mechanism for bringing material from the outer regions down to the inner ones. However, the connection between bars and bulge formation is still not clear since bars are not a universal feature in spiral galaxies.

The galaxy ESO 499-G37 lies in the southern border of the constellation of Hydra, which is shared with Antlia.

ESO 499-G37 was first observed in the late seventies within the ESO/Uppsala Survey of the ESO (B) atlas. This was a joint project undertaken by the European Southern Observatory (ESO) and the Uppsala Observatory, which used the ESO 1-metre Schmidt telescope at La Silla Observatory, Chile, to map a large portion of the southern sky looking for stars, galaxies, clusters, and planetary nebulae.

This picture was created from visible and infrared exposures taken with the Wide Field Channel of the Advanced Camera for Surveys. The field of view is approximately 3.4 arcminutes wide.

Out There: Births of Stars Declining Sharply, Astronomers Say

It?s evening in the universe.

The stars we have are dying, and we?re not making new ones the way we used to. A group of British and American astronomers recently reported that the birthrate of stars in the universe has declined precipitously and continuously over the last 11 billion years.

The universe today is only producing stars one-thirtieth as fast as it was at its peak in the lusty primordial days when protogalaxies, all gas and spume, were bouncing around like pups in a closet, colliding and merging, popping with blazing bright new stars.

In a news release issued by the Royal Astronomical Society, the astronomer David Sobral of Leiden University in the Netherlands said, ?You might say that the universe has been suffering from a long, serious crisis: cosmic G.D.P. output is now only 3 percent of what it used to be at the peak in star production.? Dr. Sobral and his colleagues published their paper in the Monthly Notices of the Royal Astronomical Society.

They calculated that the current consolidation rate of ?starstuff? into stars amounts to about a half a trillion tons per year per cubic light-year. The Sun is about 2,000 trillion trillion tons.

In a fundamental sense, this cosmic fatigue is not really new. Other surveys, including one led by the aptly named Alan Heavens of the University of Edinburgh a few years ago, have come to similar conclusions. But one detail of this new study hit me.

Dr. Sobral and his colleagues said that if this decline in breeding goes on, it means the universe has already made 95 percent of the star mass that it will ever make. As eternity goes on ? and on and on ? the cosmos, like Palm Springs, will be dominated by older and older stars.

There is no cause for immediate alarm. Stars live for millions or billions of years, depending on their masses; the biggest burn out quickly, while the smaller ones can limp on as red dwarfs for a trillion years or more. The Sun, a middle-size and middle-aged star, has another 5 billion years or so to go.

Our own Milky Way galaxy, moreover, is still busily hatching stars out of dense gas clouds in places like the Eagle Nebula, home of the famous Pillars of Creation. If you ever agonized about missing out on Paris in the 1920s or Italy in the Renaissance, at least you can take comfort that we live in the Golden Age of the Milky Way.

To paraphrase Bob Dylan, it?s not dark yet, but it?s getting there.

The news brought me back to the darkening days of November in the Catskills, where I used to live. When the woods suddenly become lighter and more transparent because branches are bare, the sun slants off silvery tree trunks. The ground is luminous, carpeted with red and gold leaves that are about to be buried in snow.

The notion that 95 percent of the stars that will ever shine have already shone reminded me that I had once read that 6 percent of all the humans that have ever lived are alive today. The latter statistic is a consequence of the exponential growth of the human race (and, if it keeps growing, could eventually create problems for the idea of reincarnation).

You might not think it has anything to do with the stars. But philosophers and cosmologists have wondered if there is an answer to the question of why we live where and when we do.

The cartoon history that they would like to tell goes like this: Coming out of the Big Bang 13.7 billion years ago, the universe consisted of hydrogen and helium and a little lithium. Our bodies are made of oxygen, carbon, nitrogen and iron that had to be synthesized in thermonuclear reactions in successive generations of stars that went bang and seeded space and future stars with heavier elements.

That took time. The Milky Way was born near the height of the star baby boom, about 10 billion years ago. The Sun and solar system, with its heady mix of life-ready elements, came into being 4.5 billion years ago. It took evolution another 3.8 billion years to make us, the putative princelings of the cosmos. Could it all have happened faster to someone else some place else? Nobody knows.

Nobody knows for sure, either, why cosmic star production has slowed down, the astronomers say.

In recent years, they have found evidence that some of the more violent denizens of the modern cosmos, like giant black holes and supernova explosions, can create powerful winds that blow the gas out of galaxies, preventing it from condensing into stars. One black hole in the galaxy NGC 1275 was found to be ?singing,? or belching pressure waves, to the tune of a B flat 57 octaves below middle C, thus squelching star formation over much of the entire Perseus cluster ? hundreds of galaxies.

Some theorists, notably Freeman Dyson of the Institute for Advanced Study in Princeton, have suggested ways that life could go on past the twilight of the stars, by extracting energy from black holes, for example. But that was before astronomers discovered that dark energy ? what appears to be a sort of cosmic antigravity ? is speeding up the expansion of the universe.

If this continues, the future is really dark. Eventually the universe will be expanding so fast that most other galaxies will disappear from view forever. Eventually even atoms could be ripped apart.

Time for bed.

Sometimes the universe seems to me like one of those black-humored toys: a box with a button. When you push the button, a hand comes out 14 billion years later and turns the button off.

The best marketing campaigns are unique, so you won?t want to fall in to that norm with your Thanksgiving ad; rather, think of ways to emphasize some of your properties within the context of the holiday. Does one property have great foliage? Is another in a great area for shopping or wintry activities? Does one feature a great dining room for family gatherings? Use the holiday to your advantage, and emphasize your properties? attributes with your ads.

Bornean Elephant: Genomics helps with conservation

ScienceDaily (Nov. 21, 2012) ? Studying the genetic variability of endangered species is becoming increasingly necessary for species conservation and monitoring. But, endangered species are difficult to observe and sample, and typically harbour very limited genetic diversity. Until now, the process of finding genetic markers was time consuming and quite expensive. These obstacles make the collection of genetic data from endangered animals a difficult task to fulfill. A research team led by Loun?s Chikhi, group leader at the Instituto Gulbenkian de Ci?ncia (IGC) and CNRS researcher (in Toulouse, France), has now contributed to change the odds when looking for diversity.

Taking advantage of cutting edge DNA sequencing methodology and the collaborations with the Sabah Wildlife Department in Malaysia, Rachel O'Neill's laboratory? (University of Connecticut) and a private company (Floragenex), they were able to identify the genetic markers for the Bornean elephant, an endangered species, using blood from very few animals. The results showed that Bornean elephants have very low genetic variability that can impact on their survival to a threatened habitat, but that variable genetic markers can still be identified.

The study now published in the journal PLOS ONE, besides contributing to the conservation of the Bornean elephant, opens new avenues for the conservation of other endangered species.

The Bornean elephant is a unique subspecies of the Asian elephant, with a quite distinct morphology and behavior. They are generally smaller than other elephants, with straight tusks and a long tail. Currently, there are around 2000 individuals, located only in the North of Borneo. It remains unknown how this population of elephants evolved to become so different and why its distribution is so restricted.

Despite being one of the highest priority populations for Asian elephant conservation, until now there were limited genetic tools available to study its genetic variability and none that had been specifically designed for this species. Now, in the work conducted by Reeta Sharma, a Post-Doctoral fellow in Loun?s Chikhi's group, for the first time DNA sequences that characterize the genome of the Bornean elephants, called genetic markers, were identified. The research team used two different DNA sequencing technologies that are fast and increasingly cheaper. This kind of technology has been used for common laboratory species such as mice and fruit-flies, but they are only now starting to be used on endangered and "non-model" species.

Until now, in order to determine whether the species still harboured sufficient genetic diversity it was necessary to look through huge regions of the genome, using classical genetics methodologies, or use markers developed for other species, with varying levels of success. This approach can become unsustainable for the endangered species, whose numbers have gone bellow a certain size for long time. The only study that previously had tried to analyse Bornean elephants, using genetic markers developed for other Asian elephants had found nearly no genetic diversity. The work now developed demonstrates that if the methodology can be applied to the Bornean elephant, it should be possible to find the needles we need, and not get stuck with the hay, i.e., to find variable genetic markers in many other species.

The DNA analysis done resulted from blood samples collected only from seven Bornean elephants from the Lok Kawi Wildlife Park (Sabah, Malaysia) and from Chendra, the star elephant of Oregon zoo (Portland, USA). But, the research team is confident that these DNA sequencing methods can be used to type genetically other biological samples, such as hair or faeces, easier to obtain from wild animals, even though blood or tissue samples are still necessary to identify the markers during the first steps.

Reeta Sharma, first author of this work, says: 'The methodology applied to identify the genetic markers for the Bornean elephant can be used in the future for studies on the genetic variability of other species or populations facing the risk of extinction.'

The Bornean elephants live in an environment where natural habitats disappear quickly, due to oil palm plantations and populations get isolated from each other. Having access to variable genetic markers will be crucial to identify populations that are isolated and genetically depauperate, and monitor them in the future.

The origin of these elephants in Borneo raises controversy that has been long discussed. The only study done on the basis of genetic data concluded that they had been present in Borneo for more than 300,000 years. This theory does not satisfy all researchers as there is lack of elephant fossils in Borneo to support it. Another theory is that the sultan of Java sent Javan elephants as a gift to the sultan of Sulu, who would have introduced them to Borneo.Lounes Chikhi suggests: 'The new genetic markers that we found may also allow us to unravel the mystery of the origin of these elephants in Borneo, and perhaps reconstruct part of their demographic history. This is very exciting '.

This research was carried out at the IGC in collaboration with the Laboratoire Evolution et Diversit? Biologique in Toulouse, and with the School of Biosciences, Cardiff University (UK), the Sabah Wildlife Department (Malaysia), the Danau Girang Field Centre (Malaysia), the Center for Applied Genetics and Technology, University of Connecticut (USA) and Floragenex, Inc. (USA). Research was funded mainly by Funda??o para a Ci?ncia e a Tecnologia (FCT), Portugal, and Laboratoire d'Excellence (LABEX), France.

New secondary education program to integrate science, social ...

12:53 p.m., Nov. 19, 2012--Science and social studies may be taught as separate subjects in school, but for geographers, the two overlap. The Delaware Geographic Alliance (DGA) will soon demonstrate how using fifth, sixth, seventh and ninth grade students in a newly created program.

?The idea is to couple both social studies and science curriculums to get students to understand how they are interrelated,? said David R. Legates, DGA?s academic coordinator and professor of geography at the University of Delaware. ?This will better demonstrate how the sciences of climate change, hydrology and geomorphology interact with a dynamic social, political and economic landscape.?

Charles Riordan, vice provost for research, will chair the search committee to identify the next dean of UD's College of Engineering.

Funded by a $100,000 grant from the National Oceanographic and Atmospheric Administration with support from National Geographic Society, the initiative will train teachers and their students to collect field data and analyze the results using an online mapping tool.

This technology, called Fieldscope, is a web-based platform in which students can enter measurements, field notes and photos that are then plotted according to their exact location on an interactive map. The mapping process is a teacher- and student-friendly Geographic Information System (GIS), a resource commonly used by scientists and others to cross-reference data points with geographic locations and examine trends.

Beginning in March 2013, Delaware fifth and seventh graders will take field trips to Trap Pond State Park in Laurel, Del., to test water quality and make other measurements of the environment.? Back in the classroom, they will enter precisely where the data were collected in Fieldscope, compare their findings with those of other students around the Chesapeake Bay, and analyze why there may be variations across the watershed.

?They?re acting like real scientists,? said Tonyea Mead, education associate of science curriculum at the Delaware Department of Education. ?The students aren?t just sitting there listening to someone. They?re actively involved.?

Mead and Preston Shockley, the education associate of social studies curriculum at the Delaware Department of Education, are both working closely with the DGA to develop new curriculums for fifth, sixth, seventh and ninth graders, who study watersheds, regional planning, landscapes and other topics relevant to environmental science. The first stage of the project includes four school districts: Laurel, Seaford, Woodbridge and Cape Henlopen.?

The goal is to relate human activities, such as farming, industry and construction, with their impact on the environment as measured in scientific metrics like higher nitrogen levels in water from agricultural runoff. Mead said making those kinds of connections can help students understand the material on a personal level, exploring questions like, ?How does science affect me in my everyday world??

Geography today emphasizes interdisciplinary relationships, Legates said. More than just memorizing countries on a map, geography examines ?how things are interrelated over space.? That means it integrates various fields, including other environmental sciences as well as public health and economics.?

In addition to Delaware, the program includes those states in the Chesapeake Bay watershed ? Maryland, Virginia, West Virginia, Pennsylvania and New York ? as well as Washington, D.C. Participating classrooms will pool their data in a common repository through Fieldscope. Students in Washington, for example, will enter data in the same system as Delaware students, allowing them to compare their results from afar.

In Delaware, the content is aligned to both the Delaware state science and geography standards, and funding supports transportation between schools and field sites for the students as well as substitute teachers during teacher training. Eventually the curriculum will expand to include the Delaware Bay watershed as well.

?The ultimate hope is that we will expand this to reach every student in the state and show them that science and social studies are inseparably intertwined,? Legates said.

Man United cuts debt, confident of hitting financial goals

LONDON (Reuters) - A strong start to the season and new sponsorship deals have reinforced English Premier League soccer club Manchester United's confidence it will hit this year's financial targets despite lower first-quarter earnings.

United, English champions a record 19 times, said they had cut debt to 360 million pounds ($572 million), down 17 percent from a year earlier, after a listing on the New York Stock Exchange in August that left the American Glazer family firmly in control of the club.

A vocal section of United supporters have argued that the cost of servicing debts following the Glazers' 790 million pounds leveraged buyout of the club in 2005 have hampered its ability to compete with rival clubs at home and abroad.

"We have been very pleased at how the year has started both on and off the pitch," executive vice chairman Ed Woodward told analysts on a conference call.

"Based on our first-quarter results and current visibility we remain confident that we can achieve our previously stated targets for fiscal 2013 -- revenue between 350 and 360 million pounds and adjusted EBITDA of 107-110 million pounds," he added.

United, reinforced by the summer hiring of Japan's Shinji Kagawa and Dutchman Robin Van Persie, lead the English Premier League after finishing second behind local rivals Manchester City last season.

United have also already qualified for the knockout stages of the Champions League after a costly early exit last season from Europe's most lucrative club competition.

NEW SPONSORS SIGNED UP

United shares traded 12 cents lower at $12.86 in New York shortly after the opening on Wednesday. They floated at $14 in a listing that valued the club at $2.3 billion.

Investors have generally been wary of sporting franchises, concerned that their financial fortunes are too tightly linked to sporting success.

United argue that their global fan base and a buoyant TV rights market for the English Premier League give them sound financial underpinnings.

For the three months to end-September, a reduction in broadcast revenue pushed underlying core earnings (EBITDA) 15 percent lower.

However, United said most of the decline was down to the scheduling of matches -- the club played only one Champions League game in the period -- and would be recouped.

United, who claim to have 659 million followers worldwide, signed 10 new sponsorship deals in the first quarter, the most eye-catching being a $559 million agreement with General Motors to have the Chevrolet brand on the club's famous red shirts from 2014.

The presence of Kagawa in their ranks has also led to a number of deals with Japanese firms. A 24 percent rise in revenues from all its commercial deals helped to push total revenues up 3 percent to 76 million pounds.

Profit from continuing operations was up to 20.5 million pounds against a loss of 5 million pounds a year earlier, a figure that was boosted by a tax credit which the club said related to it moving to certain U.S. tax bases.

Chelsea, who won the Champions League in May, said last week they had made a profit in 2011-12, returning to the black for the first time since Russian oligarch Roman Abramovich bought the club in 2003.

PARIS (Reuters) - Stock index futures pointed to a mixed open on Wall Street on Monday, with futures for the S&P 500 up 0.15 percent, Dow Jones futures up 0.03 percent and Nasdaq 100 futures down 0.1 percent at 3.37 a.m. EDT.

* World equities fell on Monday as concerns about the fiscal crisis in the United States and progress on a bailout plan for Greece dented optimism over global growth prospects.

* Data showed over the weekend that China's export growth climbed to a five-month high above 11 percent, beating expectations and adding to recent data suggesting the country's seven straight quarters of slowing economic growth have ended.

* China's reassuring data, however, was offset by figures showing Japan's economy shrinking 0.9 percent in the third quarter. Though this was in line with expectations, the decline in capital expenditure was much steeper than forecast.

* On Sunday, the Greek parliament approved an austerity budget for next year, a necessary step to unblock a new tranche of credit from the European Union and International Monetary Fund before the government runs out of cash, although investors remain concerned about whether the EU and IMF will agree to send the next tranche.

* A senior Republican senator voiced confidence on Sunday that U.S. lawmakers would forge a deal on the year-end "fiscal cliff," while a top aide to President Barack Obama signaled a willingness to compromise over raising tax rates on the rich.

* Apple Inc and HTC Corp announced on Saturday a global patent settlement and 10-year licensing agreement that ends one of the first major conflagrations of the smartphone patent wars. Shares of HTC jumped by their permitted daily limit on Monday.

* UK lawmakers will quiz executives of Starbucks , Google and Amazon on Monday about how they have managed to pay only small amounts of tax in Britain while racking up billions of dollars worth of sales here.

* U.S. stocks advanced on Friday but failed to make up for what turned out to be the worst week for markets since June, as investors turned their attention from the presidential election to the coming negotiations over the "fiscal cliff."

* The Dow Jones industrial average <.dji> edged up 4.07 points, or 0.03 percent, to 12,815.39 at the close. The Standard & Poor's 500 Index <.spx> rose 2.34 points, or 0.17 percent, to 1,379.85. The Nasdaq Composite Index <.ixic> advanced 9.29 points, or 0.32 percent, to close at 2,904.87.

Christmas tree grower hard hit by Sandy

HAGERSTOWN, Md. --?The World Bank, CIA and other Washington-area customers won't be getting the giant Christmas trees they ordered after Superstorm Sandy buried a Maryland farm in more than 2 feet of snow and snapped many of the 15- to 35-foot firs.

Gale-force winds drove wet snow deep into the boughs of firs at Pinetum Christmas Trees in Swanton, high in the Appalachian Mountains. The snow then froze and pulled limbs from their sockets, said the owner, Marshall Stacy. More than 3,000 trees were damaged, resulting in roughly $40,000 in losses.

"It was like dominoes ? one tree came down and hit the next one," Stacy said. He has refunded nearly 70 percent of his orders.

Customers will have to look elsewhere, but there are few farms that sell oversized trees. That's because it takes so long to grow them, said Rick Dungey of the National Christmas Tree Association. Other growers in Maryland's Garrett County said the storm did little damage to their smaller trees.

The Brickman Group, a Gaithersburg-based commercial landscaper, said it found another supplier for the 15 trees that will decorate a corporate office park in Virginia but they are about 3 feet smaller than the 16-footers the company usually provides.

Stacy said the damaged trees can't be sold for paper pulp because their bushy branches ? the result of annual trimming ? makes them too costly to process. Some of the boughs will be made into wreaths, he said.?

Mutations in genes that modify DNA packaging result in facioscapulohumeral muscular dystrophy (FSHD)

ScienceDaily (Nov. 11, 2012) ? A recent finding by medical geneticists sheds new light on how Facioscapulohumeral Muscular Dystrophy develops and how it might be treated. More commonly known as FSHD, the devastating disease affects both men and women.

FSHD is usually an inherited genetic disorder, yet sometimes appears spontaneously via new mutations in individuals with no family history of the condition.

"People with the condition experience progressive muscle weakness and about 1 in 5 require wheelchair assistance by age 40," said Dr. Daniel G. Miller, University of Washington associate professor of pediatrics in the Division of Genetic Medicine. Miller and his worldwide collaborators study the molecular events leading to symptoms of FSHD in the hopes of designing therapies to prevent the emergence of symptoms or reduce their severity.

In the Nov. 11 online issue of Nature Genetics, Miller and Dr. Silvere M. van der Maarel of Leiden University in The Netherlands, along with an international team, report their latest findings on the role of epigenetic modifications in causing the disease. In Seattle, Dr. Stephen Tapscott of the Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Center was also a major contributor to the project. He is a UW professor of neurology and a researcher at the UW Center for Human Development and Disability.

Epigenetics refers to mechanisms that influence how the genome is regulated and how, where and when genes act -- all without altering the underlying DNA sequence. The flexibility of DNA packaging -- its wrapping, which can be tightened and loosened, and its chemical tags -- is one of the epigenetic forces on the genome. This packaging is called the chromatin structure and is one way specialized cells such as those in our muscles allow groups of genes to be shut off, or be available for expression.

Patients with FSHD, usually have a deletion of genetic material that reduces the number of copies of a repeated DNA sequence arrayed on chromosome 4. The deletion alters the chromatin structure of the region and allows the muscle-toxic DUX4 genes within each repeat to be inappropriately activated.

"Most genetic mutations reduce the production of a protein, or a mutated gene might produce a detrimental protein," Miller said. "FSHD is unusual because it is most often caused by genetic deletions that paradoxically result in the production of DUX4 in the wrong tissue at the wrong time. "

Scientists have previously shown that the genetic deletions in FSHD somehow caused an epigenetic change -- an alteration in one of the mechanisms that control a gene's activity. The relaxation of the tightly wound chromatin structure allowed the otherwise sealed code in the gene to be read and the toxic DUX4 to be produced in skeletal muscle.

"Our study builds on this model and identifies a new mechanism that allows this relaxation and DUX4 production to occur. Production of DUX4 in muscle cells can be viewed as a molecular switch. We've discovered that the switch that turns on DUX4 expression can be activated in different ways but the mechanism of muscle destruction by DUX4 remains the same. Identifying different ways the switch can be activated is a crucial step toward therapy development because it allows us to apply multiple and different strategies to prevent activation of the switch." Miller said.

Five percent of FSHD-affected individuals have array lengths, longer than 10 copies (the threshold for chromatin relaxation) of the DNA sequence in question making them appear to lack the genetic mutation that normally causes FSHD.

However, these unusual individuals lacked repression of DUX4 code-reading in their skeletal muscle cells because of a mechanism other than copy number.

"Breakthroughs in scientific discovery are often achieved by studying individuals with unusual disease presentations," Miller said. The researchers identified individuals without the usual FSHD-disease causing DNA deletion but who still lacked repression of the DUX4 code reading.

Dr. Rabi Tawil at the University of Rochester made the clinical diagnosis in these people and established cultures of muscle cells from biopsies. Dr. Richard Lemmers working in van der Maarel's laboratory demonstrated that the chromatin structure was relaxed despite a normal number of repeat units on chromosome 4. With the help of Dr. Michael Bamshad, UW professor of pediatrics, and Dr. Deborah Nickerson, UW professor of genome sciences, Miller and his group sequenced and analyzed the protein coding portions of the genomes of individuals with FSHD caused by this uncommon mechanism.

The researchers discovered that these individuals had causative mutations in the Structural Maintenance of Chromosomes Hinge Domain 1 gene. Mutations in this gene cause decreased levels of the SMCHD1 protein and result in relaxation of the chromatin structure surrounding the muscle cells' DNA allowing toxic DUX4 to be generated.

"The discovery linking mutations in the SMCHD1 gene with FSHD is particularly satisfying," Miller said, 'because the normal form of SMCHD1 has an established role in repressing the reading of portions of the DNA code. SMCHD1 Is involved in silencing one of the two X chromosomes in females and in turning off repetitive elements in other parts of the genome.

Understanding the FSHD-causing mechanism of SMCHD1 mutations, Miller said, suggests ideas for therapeutic strategies to suppress the production of the muscle-damaging DUX4 and for treatments for the more common forms of FSHD.
