PITTSBURGH -- As a result of the Rangers' strong first half, John Tortorella will be behind one of the benches at the All-Star Game in Ottawa on Jan. 29.
Three teams will be represented behind the two benches. Claude Julien and Boston's coaching staff are in because the Bruins won the Stanley Cup. That group will coach one team. The other team will be jointly run by the coaches of the Eastern Conference team and the Western Conference team with the best points percentage through Monday's games, the halfway point of the season.
The only other team in the East that can catch the Rangers is the Bruins, so the Rangers (25-9-4 going into Friday night's game here), represented by Tortorella, are in. The coach of one of five Western Conference teams -- Vancouver, Chicago, San Jose, St. Louis or Detroit -- will join Tortorella.
"It's not me, it's the group of guys," he said. "I think it's an honor for the organization. That's a reflection of the organization, not me."
Although Tortorella won the Stanley Cup with Tampa Bay in 2004, he didn't have the opportunity to coach in the 2005 All-Star Game because of the lockout that wiped out the season.
Sauer still outMichael Sauer did not skate in the morning optional at Consol Energy Center and Tortorella offered no update on his condition. Sauer has been out since suffering a concussion Dec. 5. Wojtek Wolski and Erik Christensen were healthy scratches.
Crosby around, but not inIn their first visit to Pittsburgh this season, the Rangers did not have to face Sidney Crosby, who again has been sidelined with concussion symptoms. He is not skating but was in good spirits during an impromptu chat outside the Penguins' locker room. Crosby is around the rink a lot and attends team meetings. He had an assist when the Rangers won, 4-3, at Madison Square Garden Nov. 29.
