'Safety Not Guaranteed' Filmmakers Reteam With Big Beach For ...

Mike Fleming

EXCLUSIVE: The filmmaking team behind the indie release Safety Not Guaranteed has lined up a follow-up project. Big Beach is re-teaming with filmmakers Colin Trevorrow and Derek Connolly on The Ambassador, an original screenplay that Connolly and Trevorrow will write and Trevorrow will direct. Big Beach?s Marc Turtletaub and Peter Saraf will produce.

The film is set in the United Nations Office of Outer Space Affairs, which not only monitors the universe for signs of life but is prepared to represent humanity if and when aliens arrive on earth. A shy, low-ranking staffer unwittingly makes first contact when he meets a mysterious beautiful woman and must risk more than his job when they are threatened by forces of this world and beyond.

?Colin and Derek are wonderful filmmakers who are able to take a big idea and find the emotion and humanity in it by humorously centering on complex characters confronting universal issues,? the Big Beach partners said in a statement. ?We are very excited to make another movie with them.??Trevorrow and Connolly said the film ?is about a pair of emotionally dysfunctional people forced into a situation beyond their control. This is exactly how we feel while shooting a film, which makes the support of trusted collaborators like Big Beach an absolute necessity.?

Connolly won the Waldo Salt Screenwriting Award at the 2012 Sundance Film Festival for Safety Not Guaranteed, which was acquired and released by FilmDistrict. Connolly and Trevorrow met as students at NYU and have collaborated on numerous projects. They are represented by Verve, 3 Arts Entertainment and attorney Lev Ginsburg.
