Johnson: With Legalized Pot, ?the World Will Be a Better Place?

Gary Johnson, the Libertarian Party's presidential candidate, anticipates that marijuana will be legal within four years, the Seattle Times reports. Pointing out that legalizing pot will free up law enforcement and the courts to deal with other issues, he predicts, "the world will be a better place."

What is the Libertarian Party's stand on drugs?

The Libertarian Party platform considers the "use of drugs for medicinal or recreational purposes" to be a victimless crime, and as such supports the repeal of all laws that criminalize drug use. When speaking to the Seattle Times, Johnson reported using marijuana in 2008 while recovering from a paragliding accident.

Alleged Choom Gang membership does not encourage Barack Obama to stand up for pot

As noted by ABC, President Obama has been very open in his memoir about smoking marijuana while a teen. An upcoming book about the president reveals that his affection for pot may have been even stronger than previously known. Even so, the president has had no intention of legalizing pot, CBS News reported. When commenting on questions posted to a town hall submission page, the president noted that the legalization of marijuana as a means of stabilizing the economy was a top-rated inquiry. "The answer is, no, I don't think that is a good strategy to grow our economy," Obama told the audience in 2009. He followed it up in 2012 with Jimmy Fallon. Seattle PI reported that he told the late-night host "We're not going to have legalized weed anytime soon." (The Democratic Party platform does not have an entry pertaining to the legalization of drugs.)

The Republican Party platform: "Continuing the fight against illegal drugs"

The Republican Party platform states that its members are committing to "continuing the fight against illegal drugs." When asked by a Denver CBS reporter about the legalization of medical marijuana, GOP presidential candidate Mitt Romney referred to marijuana as a gateway drug and outlined that opposed its legalization. In fact, the candidate chided the reporter for not asking more questions that are relevant on "issues of significance."

Green Party favors legalization of all drugs

The Green Party credits the war on drugs as being a catalyst leading to an "erosion of freedom in the United States." The party platform calls for an end to the war on drugs. The party would amend the Controlled Substances Act to show that drug use is no longer a crime. It favors a gradual legalization of drugs in the United States.
